Gun Advertising in Tennessee

Shall Not Be Infringed (written by Bitter, the female co-blogger)

I find it funny that you can’t drive 10 miles in the Nashville area without passing a billboard for some kind of gun shop or seeing a gun shop from the road.

Even if many of them are very simple with their graphics and their messages, it’s entertaining. It certainly reflects that the gun culture is healthy even in an urban area.

However, there’s one that drives me up the wall in all of the years I’ve been driving through from the East Coast to Nashville area. It’s Outdoor Junction at exit 290 off I-40. In all of the years they have been advertising on billboards along I-40, they have only catered to men. They bill themselves as a place to buy “Men’s Toys” with a picture of a handgun. It would be one thing if, somewhere in their advertising corridor, they included a billboard catering to women. They don’t. They have multiple billboards to promote how they appear to only sell things to men. I can tell you right now that I would never be willing to walk in because their advertising sends a message that they simply don’t even acknowledge women as customers shopping for themselves as opposed to shopping for their men.

What's funny is when a female gun nut pretends that she's surprised at this. I suppose she's really unaware that gun ownership, gun rights, gun nuttiness and all other things about guns are largely dominated by and geared towards the men folk.

Here's one indication, if the outdoor advertising in Nashville is not sufficient.  The Truth About Guns, which is the undisputed leader in on-line gun fanaticism conducted a reader survey last year. The results were anything but surprising.

  1. Keep believing that. The fact that you don't think women are arming themselves only helps our cause.

    1. Your ignorance makes you less able to fight your battles. Your deliberate lack of awareness about who are buying guns keeps you focused on one group alone, meaning that you don't understand your enemy.

    2. You sound like a fool using works like battle and enemy. I thought you said that you and I want the same thing but disagree on the right way to achieve it. When you talk like this your true motives become clear, the loosest gun control possible to reduce the inconvenience to you personally and fuck everybody and everything else. That's you.

    4. Mikeb, I've reached the conclusion that there's no negotiating with you. You're not interested in reducing gun deaths. You care only about punishing good citizens for not being criminals. So yes, I oppose just about everything you want. None of it would do good for this country.

    5. Now there's compromise and a rational approach.

    6. Greg, that position might make sense if you had answered my question about safe storage of guns. But since you dodged, avoided and outright refused to answer it, it's clear that you're full of shit, man. Demanding by law that idiot gun owners invest in a gun safes and use them, is not "punishing good citizens." I realize you need to say that in order to somehow defend your untenable position, but I would imagine even those on your side of the argument see how badly you're losing and wish you'd just shut up.

    7. Mikeb, I answered your question. I can't help it that you demand simplistic answers to things that aren't an either/or.

Anonymous, I see no reason to compromise on principles.

    8. "no negotiating with you"
Are you taking lessons from Ted Cruz?
Even the founders gave in on slavery to form a union. You won't even discuss issues. It's your way, or it's infringing on your rights. It's your attitude that disgusts people, not the insistence on your perceived rights.

    9. Anonymous, name a right that you care about that you're willing to compromise on.

    10. If it's best for all Americans, any.

Why won't you answer questions, but expect others to?

    11. It's never a good idea to compromise on rights. That's my answer.

    12. Your answer, which you promote everyday, is killing 10's of thousands of innocent people every year. No surprise a criminal would fight for that kind of results.

    13. "It's never a good idea to compromise on rights. That's my answer."

Wait just a goddamned minute. How often have you berated me for not being willing to compromise? How many times have you asked me what I'd me willing to give up in return? How many times have I told you it's not a negotiation?

Greg, you talk so much bullshit, even you can't keep it straight.

    14. Mikeb, it's your side that keeps calling for "meaningful dialogue" about "compromise." But it's fine for you to compromise. You're not advocating for rights.

  2. The penis-pistol comparison is true. Men are substituting their small dicks with a big gun.

    1. And the women would be substituting,,,,,,,,,,, what?

    2. The women are too few to even worry about. That's the point of the post. The gun world is a man's world. The manly gun nuts sometimes try to convince people of the opposite in order to lend some kind of normalcy to their sick obsession with guns.

  3. "Do they manage to pull of a bustling business in spite of ignoring outreach to the largest growing portion of the gun owning community?"

The venue she refers to is only hurting itself. A new indoor range/gun store in my area works diligently to cater to this fastest growing portion. There are classes for both basic shooting and carry permit for women only. Also somewhere between a third and a half of the sales staff are women.

    1. The reason it'll never amount to much is because women cannot suffer from the same types of mental disorders that often precipitate entry into the world of guns. They have to do with testosterone, feelings of inadequacy and inferiority, wannabe machoism and other peculiarly masculine things.

    2. Mikeb, what sex are you? But really, it doesn't matter, since those of us with intelligence don't buy into biological determinism of that kind.

    3. There is a difference between the sexes. Do you guys bleed?

    4. If you prick us, do we not bleed?

    5. You are a prick, a stupid prick. It's clear why your students rank at the bottom nationally.

  4. "Raise your hand if you didn’t see that one coming. Most of the readers are guys, something I really want to change. Hopefully we can get Destinee to do some more of her great reviews. I know there are a couple women waiting in the wings for some high powered weaponry to review, so we’ll get on that. And I’ll tell RF to tone it down with the supermodels."

And they want to be more inclusive.

    1. That's the most popular pro-gun site on the planet, and it's a boy's club. And that's perfectly representative of the gun-owning world at large.

    2. Mikeb, that site is aimed at a stereotypically male audience, what with all the images of swimsuit models and the like. But you'd do well to learn that not all gun owners are interested in that one site.
