news reports
Police officers recovered a handgun from George Zimmerman and took
two guns from a man accused of shooting at Zimmerman while both were
driving, authorities said Tuesday.
Police also released a 911 call
in which the caller says the other man, Matthew Apperson, told him he
was forced to fire his gun Monday at the former neighborhood watch
leader on a busy street in the Orlando suburb of Lake Mary.
"A guy
says he had to shoot a guy through the window and he wants the police
to come," the man said on the call. "He had to shoot at somebody ... He
said it was George Zimmerman."
Zimmerman suffered minor injuries from flying glass and debris.
Two
guns were taken from Apperson's car, including a revolver that had a
spent shell casing. Police officers will also execute a search warrant
on Zimmerman's pickup truck, said Lake Mary Police Officer Bianca
Gillett.
Both men had the guns legally.
Detectives are still
investigating and no charges have been filed against Zimmerman or
Apperson. She said the investigation could take time. Documents released
Tuesday show that detectives are investigating the shooting as a
possible aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
"It
was a busy time of day on a very busy street," Gillett said. "We are
thinking there is someone that saw something that they could come
forward and provide that information to the Lake Mary Police
Department."
"gun confiscation"
ReplyDeleteI don't think this is confiscation, but rather falls under the category of collecting evidence since the firearms will have a bearing on any potential charges and court case.
The report said the guns were taken. If I'm not mistaken, some of you pro gun guys have argued that any taking of a gun constitutes confiscation. I'm the one who pointed out that you guys use "confiscation" to mean different things in different arguments.
DeleteIsn't that whacko? Driving around with loaded guns right in their cars? Unbelievable. Perfectly legal. Absolutely insane. Thank God I don't live in Florida. Lunatic State.
ReplyDeleteFJ, it's perfectly legal in California also if you have a carry permit. Even here in the wilds of Minnesota.
Delete"LAKE MARY, Fla. – A man who shot at George Zimmerman during a confrontation earlier this week along a busy central Florida road has been arrested.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Apperson was charged Friday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a missile into an occupied conveyance, Lake Mary police reported in a news release. Apperson turned himself in at the police department Friday evening."
"Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, has said the former neighborhood watch volunteer had recently moved to another state but came back to the Orlando suburb of Lake Mary for Mother's Day. He was driving to a doctor's appointment Monday when Apperson intentionally fired his gun into Zimmerman's truck without provocation, detectives said."

It will be interesting to see what evidence they have to base the charges on. Especially the part about shooting without provocation. I'm also sort of surprised, or not that this is the first shooting in quite a while that Mike didn't complain about the lack of a speedy arrest.
Thanks for reminding me. They should both have been arrested immediately, obviously.
DeleteThey should both have been arrested immediately, obviously.
DeleteOn what charges? OK--I can see arresting the shooter on the spot, but Zimmerman should have been arrested for, what--being shot at while being unlikable?
More stuff coming out on the man that took a shot at Zimmerman.
Delete"The man accused of shooting at George Zimmerman bonded out of jail over the weekend and has surrendered his guns and ammunition to law enforcement, police said."
"In arresting documents, an officer noted that Apperson displays "unusual behavior" and seems to be "fixated" on Zimmerman.
“After conducting numerous interviews throughout the week, detectives determined that Mr. Apperson did intentionally fire his weapon into the vehicle occupied by George Zimmerman,” police said in a news release."
"According to an arrest report, Zimmerman said Apperson pulled up behind him and said, "You remember me you fat (expletive)?"
Zimmerman also accuses Apperson of saying, "You owe me your life. The only reason I didn't press charges on you is because I wanted to kill you myself," the affidavit said."
"Arresting documents also note that a Lake Mary police officer called to the scene overheard Apperson say, "I hope I got him this time."

"They should both have been arrested immediately, obviously."
DeleteAnd then that pesky rule requiring charges within a certain amount of time would have come into play. In fact, both would have had to have been released, and in this case, Mr. Apperson rearrested once the prosecutor decided to bring charges.
