A Lake Placid man faces felony weapons charges after his wife was accidentally shot Tuesday morning by the couple's 2-year-old son.
Police said the 2-year-old was able to access an unsecured and loaded .40-caliber pistol.
The boy fired the weapon, police said, and the bullet hit his mother, Erin Coffey, 24, in the buttock and exited through her abdomen.
Further investigation revealed Mr. Coffey does not have a pistol permit in New York and thus is not legally allowed to possess the weapon, Lake Placid Police said.
As police executed a search warrant for the premises, they recovered a second loaded weapon, a revolver.

NSSF Gets Government Grant - CSGV Doesn't Like It

from ssgmarkcr

I came across this and someone definitely isn't happy.

"NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) announced today that it has been awarded a two-year, $2.4 million grant by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Funds will go toward providing firearm safety education messaging and free gun locks through NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program to communities throughout the country, to encourage responsible firearm storage and help reduce firearm accidents, theft and misuse."

This project has distributed over 36 million free gun locks to gun owners along with literature to educate owners on safe storage of firearms.  However, as I said, someone isn't happy about government money going to this project,

"Newtown, CT−Two gun violence prevention groups, the Newtown Action Alliance and Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, have launched a petition campaign calling on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to cancel a planned $2.4 million grant to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and find a more suitable partner for their gun violence prevention efforts.
On September 10, 2015, the Newtown-headquartered NSSF announced that it had received a two-year grant from DOJ to produce Project ChildSafe Safety Kits, which the organization distributes to law enforcement agencies around the country. The kits include a cable-style gun lock and a brochure detailing gun safety procedures."

Now if the CSGV had some evidence that funds that were supposed to go to go for gun locks was being spent to lobby congress, then they might have a justifiable beef.  But all I'm seeing is that someone they don't approve of is getting some good PR for the very beneficial program that provides real world and real time improvement in guns being safely stored.
What does everyone here think of what seems to me to be a bad case of sour grapes?

One thing I think is this: the NSSF says child locks "help reduce firearm accidents, theft and misuse." I'd like to know how "a cable-style gun lock" would reduce theft.

3rd-Grader Brings Gun To School, Accidentally Shoots Classmate

Huffington Post

Officials in Georgia say a third-grader who accidentally shot a classmate at school found the weapon while exploring his family's kitchen.
The shooting happened Tuesday at Hornsby Elementary School in Augusta. Authorities said the child was playing with the gun inside a desk when it accidentally discharged, grazing a girl. School officials say she was treated at a hospital and released.
Richmond County Department of School Safety Chief Alfonzo Williams said in a statement the boy was looking around his house for a toy and found the gun hidden in a curio stand in the kitchen. Williams said he used a chair to climb onto a counter to get to the gun.
The students' names weren't released because of their ages.

Nicholas's Law

Nicholas Naumkin

Local news

Nicholas’s Law is named for twelve-year-old Nicholas Naumkin, who in December 2010 was fatally shot while playing with his friend who found his father’s unlocked and loaded handgun.
“I applaud the State Assembly’s vote today passing Nicholas’s Law, which will prevent future tragedies such as the one that devastated our family.” said Oksana Naumkin, Nicholas’s mother. “With today’s vote, we are a step closer to enacting a statewide law that will mean other families will not have to endure our ongoing pain. Now it is the Senate’s responsibility to act. We are not going away. We will continue to fight for Nicholas’s Law until it is the law of the State of New York.”
Safe storage laws exist in Rochester, Buffalo, Westchester County and New York City. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case challenging San Francisco’s 2007 safe storage law.

Supreme Court Rejects NRA Challenge To San Francisco Gun Rules

NPR

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to block two San Francisco gun control measures that were fiercely opposed by the National Rifle Association. At least one veteran court observer says the high court's decision raises questions about how the justices interpret the Second Amendment.

First, the basics: A 2007 San Francisco ordinance requires residents to keep handguns under lock and key or to use trigger locks when they are not carrying their weapons. Another law, dating to 1994, bans the sale of ammunition that expands on impact, or hollow-point bullets.

Plaintiff Espanola Jackson and seven other petitioners, including the NRA, filed suit in 2012. They sought an injunction to keep the lockbox law from being enforced. But in March 2014, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the City and County of San Francisco and left both measures intact.

In their appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, the plaintiffs repeated the argument they had made all along, claiming that "San Francisco stands alone in insisting that it may deny its residents immediate access to operable handguns in their own homes under the guise of regulating the manner in which they store them." They painted the picture of a law-abiding homeowner who "must fumble for the reading glasses and the lockbox while an intruder roams the premises."

The plaintiffs argued that they had precedent on their side, citing the high court's ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller. In that case, the justices ruled that under the Second Amendment a gun owner has a right to self-defense with a gun available within the home.

But only two justices, Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, voted to review the case. Four of the nine must agree to hear a case.

Texas 3-Year-old Dead in Accidental Shooting - Gun Owner Arrested Immediately but Not for the Kid Shooting

Local news

Abilene police responded to an accidental shooting death at 12:41 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of Washington Street.

According to police, a three-year-old child was found dead from a gunshot wound. Police have not released the child’s gender or identity.

Abilene police have arrested Demetrius Lmar McDonald in connection with the shooting. He was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Police said McDonald is a felon and possessing a shotgun is prohibited.

After being questioned by police, McDonald was arrested for 3rd Degree Felony Possession of Firearm by a felon.

McDonald’s bond is set at $75,000. Police say additional charges may be considered by police after the full investigation.

More proof that being a felon in possession of a gun is treated more seriously than allowing a kid to kill themselves with a gun. When determining who gets arrested, being black doesn't hurt either.

South Carolina 3-Year-old Shoots Himself - Family Dispute Leads to Second Shooting

Local news

The accidental shooting of a 3-year-old at a home near Myrtle Beach Saturday led to an argument between family members and a second shooting hours later at Grand Strand Medical Center, authorities said.

After surgery, the child was stable but critical, police said. The other victim suffered a wound that wasn’t life threatening.

Two people were taken into custody after the hospital shooting, said Lt. Joey Crosby with the Myrtle Beach Police Department. The suspects will be identified when they are formally charged, but Crosby said that may not happen until Sunday.

The child was shot around 1 p.m. at a home on Carnation Circle, said Horry County Police Lt. Raul Denis. Investigators believe the child found a gun in a dresser drawer and accidentally fired the weapon. Denis said police do not expect to charge anyone in the child’s case.

The second shooting happened a few hours later outside the rear entrance of Grand Strand Medical Center. Late Saturday, police were still piecing together how the situation unfolded, but they said family members began arguing and one person was shot.

Jacksonville Florida Police Hunt for Gunman, 16, Wanted in School Bus Shooting that Injured 2

Local news

A laughing teen gunman being hunted on charges of shooting two girls on a Jacksonville school bus Thursday has been identified as a 16-year-old nomad angry about being spit on as he and two friends readied to fight some other passengers, police said.

The two 16-year-old victims, one shot through both cheeks and the other in the back of the head, remained hospitalized in fair condition Friday.

The Westside attack on a bus carrying students from three alternative schools occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on 118th Street just outside the front gate of Ringhaver Park.

Police early Friday afternoon identified the gunman as Edgar Robles, 16, who is charged in arrest warrants with two counts of attempted murder and one count of throwing a deadly missile. Police were hunting him citywide and said he is known to live roaming from place to place in the city, said Sheriff’s Office Director Tom Hackney.

I thought they weren't allowed to use a picture of a minor?

My main question is  where did the gun come from.  As Baldr always says, every gun in the hands of a kid has to pass through the hands of an adult.  I would go even further.  Every gun used in a crime started out the legal property of some lawful gun owner.  Because these guys enjoy such loose gun laws, and because they are so irresponsible, their guns flow into the criminal world like the mighty Mississippi.

Ohio 3-Year-old Shoots and Kills a 1-Year-old

Local news reports

A three-year-old boy in Cleveland, Ohio shot and killed a one-year-old boy after picking up a handgun that had been left unattended inside a home on Sunday.
The infant was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound to the head but was later pronounced dead, reports the Associated Press.
Investigators were trying to determine where the gun came from, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters.
“It’s a sad day for Cleveland,” said Williams. “This fascination that we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop. This is a senseless loss of life.”
I guess Police Chief Williams is one of those political hacks who just doesn't understand.

Houston Area Children are Dropping Like Flies Thanks to Guns in the Home

The Guardian

Six-year-old boy in critical condition on Monday after Codrick Beal, four, and unnamed three-year-old fatally shot themselves in earlier incidents.

Three young children have been shot accidentally in the Houston area in the past four days, two fatally from self-inflicted gunshots.

In the latest incident, a six-year-old boy was taken to hospital in critical condition after being shot by his five-year-old brother on Monday morning in north-east Harris County, police told reporters.

On Sunday, Codrick Beal, four, shot himself with a gun he found while staying with a family friend at a house in a northern suburb, while his mother celebrated her birthday.

Beal’s death followed that of an unnamed three-year-old boy, who died after shooting himself in the head at home in north-western Harris County on Friday afternoon.

“It’s just a terrible accident,” Leticia Beal, a cousin of Codrick’s mother, Ashley Beal, told the Houston Chronicle. “We see it all the time on the news but you never think it’ll hit home. It’s the most horrible thing.”

Another four-year-old boy died in a shooting incident in the west Houston suburb of Katy last November. Ryan Welch was shot in the face by a .40-calibre Smith & Wesson pistol found in a closet in the master bathroom of his home next to a BB gun and a machete, the Chronicle reported. It was not clear whether the boy or his six-year-old brother pulled the trigger.

On Monday, the Harris County sheriff’s office said investigations into the two fatal shootings last weekend were ongoing.

“If you are going to keep a firearm in your home it should ALWAYS be stored in a locked safe, gun vault, or storage case AND out of the reach of children,” the office said in a statement.

Local news reports

A 3-year-old boy died at the hospital after he was struck in what investigators characterized as an "accidental shooting" at his home in northwest Harris County.

Sheriff's deputies said the incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Friday inside the two-story home in the 7400 block of Betanna near Elmont.

The boy, his mother, and another young sibling were the only ones in the house at the time.
The mother was in another part of the house when she heard a gunshot, officials said.

She rushed to her two children and found the 3-year-old with a gunshot to the neck or jaw area, deputies said.

The boy, who has not been identified, was flown by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital at the Texas Medical Center, where he died, officials said.

Sheriff's detectives said later Friday they have not yet questioned the boy's mother, who was at the hospital.

10 Things I Wish People Understood About Suicide

Vox

6) Physical barriers to suicide have been shown to work and so can conceptual ones

Studies show that when we put up a barrier fence on a bridge famous for suicides, the people who go there to jump do not go to another bridge. Bridge barriers lower the real, overall suicide rate. That is why we are finally putting up a barrier on the Golden Gate Bridge — as a chorus of experts in various fields explained, suicide barriers save lives. The act is so impulsive that most of the time people do not seem to plan ahead enough to find a backup bridge and make sure it is climbable and high enough to do the job.

In the 1990s the United Kingdom was seeing a lot of suicide by acetaminophen overdose, so they legislated that the drug had to be sold in smaller quantities. Deaths by acetaminophen overdose fell significantly. The number of overdoses stayed constant, but far fewer were fatal. People survived because the act is so impulsive that they only ingest what is in the house, so smaller bottles save lives.

In the US over half the gun deaths are suicides and over half the suicides involve guns. Having immediate means is bad. If you are looking after yourself, see that it would at least take you a few hours and a bit of effort and human interaction. I have heard from several men and women who store their guns in someone else's home for this reason.

The Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said suicide is always a rushing of one's defenses, and added that there is nothing worse than rushing your defenses. Wittgenstein felt suicidal off-and-on his whole life and three of his four brothers committed suicide, but he had worked out reasons suicide was wrong and he didn't do it. As a rule, we cannot usefully tell ourselves not to be depressed, but it seems that we can usefully tell ourselves not to commit suicide.
