Strict Gun Control in Europe Powerless to Prevent or Responsible for the Rarity of Spree Shootings

Breitbart

According to the UK Guardian, the first of the two shootings took place at 3:30 pm on February 14, and the second came shortly after midnight. In total, two civilians were killed and five police officers were wounded. PET intelligence head Jeds Madsen said the gunman may have taken his cue from “militant Islamist propaganda issued by [ISIS] and other terror organizations.”

We saw this same thing in Paris, where strict gun control laws were no hindrance to the terrorists who struck Charlie Hebdo headquarters, gunning down civilians and police officers alike.

The Sydney School of Public Health’s GunPolicy.Org lists Denmark’s gun regulations as “restrictive.” For example, “the acquisition, possession, and transfer of each privately held firearm” must be recorded and “retained by an official register.” Ammunition sales are also registered/recorded.

Moreover, to own a gun in the first place, you have to be a “licensed gun owner,” because gun ownership is “a right not protected by law.” Part of getting that license includes justifying your need for firearm, and that is followed by stringent criminal background and mental health checks, among other things.

GunPolicy.Org lists France’s gun regulation as “restrictive” as well, yet attackers in neither country were stopped by gun control measures.

On January 19, Breitbart News reported that French police admitted gun control was hurting their ability to perform as law enforcement officers and said they wanted to go from a lax policy on firearms to one more focused on armed readiness. The Associated Press reported that this change included a request to issue police “more” guns and “heavier” guns.

Like the Washington Times, Breitbart cannot report a story without  twisting it beyond recoggnition.  The extreme rarity of these incidents in Denmark and France is the real story.  The way strict gun control has nearly eliminated these tragedies, that's the real story.

An interesting side note in the story is in the final paragraph.  Police and military do indeed need heavier firepower than civilians are allowed in order to cope with that occasional and exceptional situation.

Minnesota City Hall Shooting Leaves 2 Officers Hurt And Gunman Dead

Huffington Post

A gunman opened fire inside a suburban Minneapolis city building Monday night, injuring two police officers before authorities returned fire and killed him, the county sheriff's department said.

Hennepin County Sheriff's Office chief deputy Mike Carlson said the shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. while two officers were being sworn in at the New Hope City Hall.

The newly sworn-in officers and others were leaving the city council chambers when they encountered a man armed with a "long gun," Carlson said at a news conference.

The man opened fire and struck two New Hope police officers, Carlson said. Other officers immediately returned fire, killing the gunman, he said.

Louisiana Shooting Rampage - Not a Gun-Free Zone

Ben Freeman

The Guardian

A south Louisiana man attacked his former in-laws, his current wife, and the head of a hospital where he had worked, killing three before killing himself, authorities said.

The shootings happened at four locations in two parishes about 45 miles south-west of New Orleans on Thursday. The first report came about 6.40pm, when Lafourche parish councilman Louis Phillip Gouaux — who was shot in the throat — called 911 from his home in Lockport, Houma, Louisiana, the Courier newspaper reported.
The suspect, Ben Freeman, 38, was the ex-husband of Gouaux's daughter Jeanne, Lafourche parish sheriff's office spokesman, Brennan Matherne, said in a news release.
Gouaux's wife, Susan "Pixie" Gouaux, was dead when deputies arrived, Matherne said. Louis Phillip Gouaux and his daughter, Andrea Gouaux, were injured and taken to University Hospital in New Orleans. Both were in critical but stable condition, Matherne said.
About 20 minutes later in Raceland, Ochsner St Anne general hospital administrator Milton Bourgeois was shot and killed at close range at his home, Matherne said. His wife, Ann Bourgeois, was shot and taken to the New Orleans hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
Raceland police said Bourgeois was shot at close range and his wife was shot in the leg.

The best friend of the California man who opened fire at a medical office this week said Friday that the man’s vasectomy complications left him so sick and weak that he could barely move.

“He was dying from this,” Charles Bigalow said of his childhood friend, Alan Oliver Frazier, in a telephone interview with the Reno Gazette-Journal. “He was wanting to be healthy again, but he was getting to where he couldn’t get out of bed.”

Bigalow, who now lives in Casper, Wyo., said he last spoke with Frazier on Saturday — three days before he entered the Reno offices of Urology Nevada and used a 12-gauge shotgun to kill a doctor and injure two others before fatally shooting himself.

“If I had any idea he was planning this, I would have been on an airplane in a minute — I would have stopped him in any way I possibly could,” Bigalow said as he broke down crying. “My heart goes out to the doctor, and the family. I’m really sorry it came to this.

“I know he was hurting. I don’t know what pushed him over the edge. I’ve been in tears about this for days. I’m in shock, disbelief.”

Shooting at LAX Airport - 1 Dead - 1 Arrested

Friends describe alleged gunman as quiet, shy
Paul Anthony Ciancia was described by acquaintances as quiet and shy.(FBI)
Police say that Ciancia, 23, went to LAX on Friday morning, pulled a rifle out of a bag and began shooting at TSA agents, killing a 39-year-old screener, identified as Gerardo I. Hernandez, the first TSA officer killed in the line of duty.
A law enforcement official told The Times that a note was found on the gunman expressing "disappointment in the government" and saying that he had no interest in hurting "innocent people."
Several witnesses said he appeared to shoot only at TSA agents and avoided shooting passengers. Ciancia was wounded by police. His condition was not released.
Another law enforcement source said the note contained the letters "NWO." Investigators are trying to determine whether he was a believer in the New World Order, a conspiracy theory which holds that forces are trying to create a single totalitarian government on Earth. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, emphasized that it is still early in the investigation and that detectives are not sure what role, if any, "NWO" played in the case.

Newport Beach Mall Shooting - No One Injured

The New York Daily News reports
Scared shoppers at a Southern California mall scrambled for cover Saturday as about 50 gunshots popped off in the parking lot, forcing a lockdown of stores before police ultimately nabbed the gunman.

No one was wounded in the terrifying display, and police didn’t immediately say what led suspect Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove to open fire at the swanky Fashion Island mall in Orange County’s Newport Beach.
The whole country has gone gun crazy.  Either they're shooting up the place, or justifying why others do or they're walking on egg-shells just waiting for the sound of gunfire.

For this we can thank the NRA and its fanatical adherents.

Jacob Tyler Roberts - Clackamas Mall Shooter

The Chicago Tribune reports with video

A masked gunman who opened fire in a crowded Oregon mall in the middle of the holiday shopping season, killing two people and wounding a third before taking his own life, appears to have acted alone in a random rampage, police said on Wednesday.

Investigators identified the man behind Tuesday's shooting as Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, who they said had no significant criminal history and acted without any obvious warning, though his Facebook page indicated an affinity for guns and alcohol.

Maryland Student Arrested for Making General Threatening Remarks

The Washington Post reports

A Montgomery College student was taken into custody by Rockville police Monday afternoon after commenting that he “felt like shooting people just for fun,” a spokeswoman for the school said.

The student said he was upset over a breakup, according to Elizabeth Homan, the college’s communications director. No weapon was found, she said.

People the student spoke with on Montgomery College’s Rockville campus were concerned and went to the campus’s security office, and officials called in the Rockville police. Police and campus security eventually found him eating lunch, Homan said.

Rockville Police Lt. Eric Over said a decision on whether or not the student will face criminal charges is expected to be made Tuesday following an investigation.

Police issued a “letter of trespass” that prevents the student from coming onto campus for three years without permission of the college, Homan said.
It sounds a bit invasive, but how else are they going to prevent spree shootings unless they pursue leads like this? I'm a little uncomfortable with it, though.
