Utah Gun Culture at its Finest

The Associated Press reports on the incredible.

Utah has 24 state symbols recognizing the history, geography and culture of the state. They include a state cooking pot, a state tree, a state hymn and a state folk dance.

The committee approved the bill to add a state gun on a 9-2 vote.
If this passes, Utah can be proud to be in the company of such enlightened societies that proudly display weapons as part of their heritage.

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

  1. Utah is honoring one of their favorite sons with this recognition.

John Moses Browning is one of the most successful inventors in recent history. Some of his designs are still in service today. The Government Model 1911 is still in daily use with our military and law enforcement with little modification over 100 years after its conception. Very few products can make that claim.

  2. They should go with one of those medieval shield guns. It was mostly used as a shield but had a single shot gun (that more than likely blew itself up) in the middle.

  3. Wait there's more... instead of WWJD maybe people should ask themselves WGWJO - What Gun Would Jesus Own?

  4. @Andy,

Oh, I don't know, Jesus would probably own a Glock. They hold up pretty well to dry, dusty conditions in the middle east.

Then again, I can see him owning an Uzi, or maybe even a Desert Eagle (both originally made in Israel).

Maybe we should look at what the well-armed Jewish male arms himself with in Israel today?

  5. Eeesh. Talk about our gun culture run amock. This isn't about honoring John Moses Browning or some other inventor -- that is only about the model to use for the symbol. The bigger problem here is that they are choosing a gun as a symbol of their state, like they would a bird or flower or song. This is nothing more than glorification of our culture of guns and violence.

Some may see this as some sort of patriotic symbol, but it only highlights the problems we face with crime and easy access to guns. Birds and flowers honor the natural characteristics of a state. A song honors a portion of the state's cultural history or quality. But a gun? Why not a hangman's noose? Or a police baton? Or a knife? Or a bayonet? These all "deal out justice" or self-defense against criminals or enemy combatants. I see little difference for the message here, but all give a very negative impression of Utah's values.

  6. Baldr - how about an Eagle clutching some arrows... oh wait nevermind that one is taken.

  7. Why not a picture of some fat white middle-aged dude with about 7 under-aged wives? That's Utah.

  8. Utah is helps balance out the anti-gun idiocy of New Jersey.

  9. For all you people who want to live in a society without guns, perhaps you should consider Canada or Europe. Most Americans like the fact that we can have a gun if we want. If you don't want one, then don't have one. I could give a rat's ass, but you will not dictate to me whether or not I can or cannot have a gun.

Obviously some of you didn't serve in the armed forces, or you would know about that little document called the Constitution that those of who served had to swear an oath to.

  11. Mike, what does your rant have to do with this blog post? No one is saying you don't have a right to have a gun, serving in the armed forces doesn't make you a scholar of the Constitution, and you have nothing to say about the topic (Utah's gun symbol). Did you actually read the post, or are you just into leaving random pro-gun comments?

  12. For more comments on this, I posted a blog post at New Trajectory: http://newtrajectory.blogspot.com/2011/01/utah-may-designate-state-gun.html

  13. I agree that this is not about honoring a great American inventor but rather about honoring what some feel is the great American gun cultural. For me it indicates how sick the society is.

I dind't notice that Mike's comment was off topic, but I did want to say something about this part of it.

Most Americans like the fact that we can have a gun if we want."

I'm not sure that's true. I'd bet it's more of a reflection of your friends, Mike, that people in general.

  14. Baldr, then I encourage you to pass my comment posted on your blog rebutting your post. Why is it that all of you anti-gunners moderate your blogs? If you post ANY comment that's on topic to a gun blog, it gets posted. I've never heard of any of us moderating your type's posts, no matter how contrary to our beliefs it is, but when you don't get an answer you like from us, you moderate the hell out of our comments.

  15. And Jadegold, Utah is one of the lowest in percentage when it comes to obesity in the US. We also don't practice polygamy, but hey let's not let those silly FACTS get in the way, right?

  16. Tango: Really? You mean the state wasn't founded by someone who had 55 wives? And didn't they even name a university after him there?

  17. So you cite 1 person? The other article you linked is the same church that was raided by the feds a few years ago. You're talking about a handful of people. Polygamy was outlawed in the church a LONG time ago. In other words, polygamy IS NOT PRACTICED here except for one church that, despite it's supposed widespread influence, none of us that actually live here have ever seen any of them.

What he said was that the state's population does not practice polygamy. Didn't say they didn't at one time. Kinda like, the U.S. doesn't practice slavery but some time ago, some states and some individuals did. If you still hold it against them....well, time for you to undergo some of that thought modification process me thinks. A.K.A. Forgiveness

  19. Tango, I moderate comments because so many of the comments submitted by the you pro-gun folks are threatening, violent, use foul language, or simply have as their goal to personally insult me. From what I understand, it's the same for the other anti-gun violence bloggers. Interesting that none of us leave these sorts of comments, that I've heard of, and thus moderation on your part is not as necessary.

  21. Tango, Welcome and thanks for your comments. I can assure you none of your comments will get deleted by me unless there's a real good reason, and that won't be the quality of your arguments.

I'm sure you're right about the obesity in Utah, but c'mon, polygamy is alive and well there. I watch TV, I know these things just like everybody else.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wait. You're basing your sentiments of polygamy and 'proof' based on TV shows? It obviously begs the question: Is this also where your side gets its 'facts' about guns and gun control? There is so much misinformation and rhetoric out there, it's got to come from something outlandish like TV.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tango: Again, it's not too difficult to find polygamy in Utah.

Yeah, yeah...I know the LDS Church outlawed it some time back but let's not pretend it doesn't exist.

BTW, when Utah's AG began a crackdown on polygamy in UT a number of years ago---he was voted out of office. As a result, while polygamy isn't condoned, it's also not vigorously pursued.

  24. Tango, Now I'm starting to think you have no sense of humor AND you're condescending too.

Are you so close-minded that you really think the gun control side, the side you disagree with, is the only one that suffers from misinformation? Are you really saying that your side has it all straight and your opponents don't? Are you another one of those? (those being, Joe Huffman, Linoge, Bob S., Weer'd Beard, to name just a few)
