Check Out My Smoke Detector

Gunloons often say guns are tools like a smoke detector or a fire extinguisher--something you have but hope you don't have to use.

Of course, I don't know of anyone who has to show off their smoke detectors to a buddy.  And even if you did, the worst that might happen is the thing might make a loud noise.  Not so with a gun:
Justin Adkins was hosting a barbecue at his home. Brevard County deputies said Adkins, 25, was showing a friend his .380 caliber when it accidentally fired.
The bullet went through the wall and into the kitchen, striking Kasey Canada in the back.

  1. I'm sure there was a loud noise as well when the gun went off, just like your smoke detector.

    Except that your smoke detector doesn't kill innocent bystanders even by accident.

  2. Weapons are a different class of tool, with different hazards, especially when MIS-used.

    There's nothing else with a 100% identical comparison to a firearm, but that doesn't mean that some parallels can't be drawn.

    How many people have been showing someone their new knife and they accidentally cut their finger on it?

    How many people have been showing someone their new motorcycle and then crash it?

    If the four rules of gun safety would have been followed, THIS tragedy wouldn't have occurred. Accidents happen when you mis-use ANY tool, and firearms have the capability of being one of the most deadly tools around.

  3. Every year in the United States, about 3,000 people lose their lives in residential fires.

    The number of fatal firearms accidents for the last five years of record are:

    2002 - 762;

    2003 - 730;

    2004 - 649;

    2005 - 630;

    2006 - 680.

    Maybe we should regulate smoke detectors more closely since incorrect usage of a smoke detector seems to be a bigger cause of death than accidental shootings.

  4. I knew if we searched the internet long enough we'd find one gun guy to tell the truth.

    Thanks Orygunner.

  5. @Mikeb, Sure, those are facts. That's why anti-gun and pro-gun advocates BOTH struggle to find comparisons and analogies, because nothing else is quite like a gun.

    It is, for most purposes, classified as a weapon, but that is not its only use, nor must its function (firing a bullet) be utilized for it to be useful as a weapon.

    Its purpose lies completely in the hands and intentions and goals of the person wielding the tool.
