A group of 100 environmental organizations has petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate lead in ammunition as a toxic substance.
The groups argue that more than 75 species, including the California condor and bald eagle, are harmed when they feed on the carcasses of animals killed by lead bullets and shot. Hunters who eat meat from animals killed with lead ammunition also face a risk of lead poisoning, they say, because tiny fragments of ammunition migrate from the original wound site into more distant tissue. Research has found that lead poisoning can cripple motor coordination and cause digestive problems, blindness and death.
"The EPA has taken steps to address toxic lead in almost every available product from gasoline to plumbing to toys," said Jeff Miller, a conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity, which is leading the campaign. "The one source of lead that is still causing significant lead exposure is hunting ammunition and fishing tackle."

Unregulated Lead Ammo

ReplyDeleteThat is their theory, not anything based on fact.
But then what do you expect from a group of nutjobs that sell condoms with animals on them.
O.K., so your side is creative. You're still losing.
ReplyDeleteMikeb, you do realize that the video has nothing to do with ammunition or guns, right? Leaded gasoline and lead smelters can pump a lot into the atmosphere, but gunfire? Have you looked at the typical bullet used these days? It's a jacketed round, which means that the core of lead is surrounded by a copper sheath. Look at spent bullets in the berm at the range. They're mushroomed, often, but intact.
ReplyDeleteThe practical effect of banning lead ammunition would be to prevent people from loading their own ammunition, to make factory ammo more expensive, and to reduce the accuracy and effectiveness of rifles and handguns.
ReplyDeleteWhat a surprise the gun grabbers love the idea.
Once again, Greg Camp proves that he is incapable of resisting the bait to attack those who think that gunz are fine when, but assholic morons with gunz are not fine.

sorta indicates that Greg Camp is a moron who thinks research is for OTHER folks.

are to reports from people who, unlike Poorfessur Camp, know what the fuck they're talking about.
Ah, Democommie has taken up the mantle of Dog Gone by offering up irrelevant information. If he'd note in my comment, I was not talking about shotguns. I named rifles and handguns specifically. Shotgun hunting of birds is a special case, but this article wasn't limited to that. The EPA link goes to a site that didn't load properly, but what I could see said that lead levels are on a steep decline from years gone by.
DeleteBut let's talk about why lead is necessary for standard ammunition. Lead is a common metal, and it's the densest of metals that are readily available. Unless we're going to see a mass production of depleted uranium rounds or of bullets made out of gold or tungsten sometime soon, lead is what is needed.
I don't have a login account but my real name is George R. O'Connor and I'm an attorney who hikes, climbs and fly fishes and occasionally hunts birds.
ReplyDeleteMy input:
(1) Decades ago I happened to require a "flat abdomen" radiograph - and that film revealed that a Gold inlay that had come loose and I swallowed came to rest in my vermiform appendix. There are also several round objects that appear to be bird shot present in my appendix.
(2) Ever since we eliminated Pb (lead) from auto fuel and paint we find ourselves dealing with the persistence of the element across the planet thanks to our finely-divided dispersal of the element.
(3) Pb in ecosystems as a result of waterfowl hunting is a proven fact and most states mandate Bismuth or Steel shot for hunters and non-lead weights for fishing (Tungsten has become common).
(4) Our coal-fired power plants nail us on several fronts, i.e. Sulphur inclusions in coal (leading to acid rain)l and, Mercury inclusions (leading to Mercurial contamination of watersheds and entry into the ecosystem through methylation by anaerobic bacteria); and, Lead inclusions leading to yet more Lead contamination.
George, thanks so much for that personal info. Could you elaborate on the 1st point. Have those metals given you trouble?
