Maine Hunter Shoots his Foot Off

Local news reports
A hunter is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the foot.

According to the Maine Warden Service 37-year-old Andrew Knight, of Rome, was returning from the woods Saturday when he rested his 12-gauge shotgun on his left foot.

Knight told officials the gun then discharged, firing a shot into his foot.
Gun-rights folks always accuse us of fearing inanimate objects, but when it suits their purposes, they say things like "the gun discharged."  The truth is we don't fear inanimate objects, but they love to blame them instead of the man.

Guns don't discharge by themselves.  So this irresponsible and reckless guy made at least two mistakes.  That's always the case. Whenever someone is hurt in a so-called gun accident, at least two of the 4 Rules of Gun Safety have been violated.

The reason One Strike You're Out must apply to cases like this is in all probability, this was not his very first act of negligence, he's 37-years-old, he's been doing stuff like this his whole life. Placing the muzzle of a loaded weapon on your foot is an unacceptable breach of safety.  Unless a guy like this is disarmed, this will probably not be his last.

  1. 1. I don't defend his action. You point the muzzle at your foot, you get what you deserve.

    2. You have no evidence as to what he's done in the past.

    3. He'll have a reminder of the rules of gun safety for the rest of his life.

    4. You just want to disarm as many as possible.

    1. 4. No, just the ones who need disarming.

    2. Mikeb, in your view, that means any private citizen who owns a gun. We know this to be the case from your repeated statements and insults.

    3. You know no such thing. I, in my wildest fantasy, would like to disarm about half of you guys, the unfit and irresponsible half which is responsible for most of the problems.

    4. You fantasize about disarming people? That's pretty disturbing if you think about it. You're so invested in gun control that you are dreaming and thinking about it constantly.

    5. Mike, are you confident no good people will be caught up in that group of 50 or so million people whose rights you want to strip?

  2. Let me correct the last sentence of the news excerpt:

"Knight told officials the gun discharged *because he was stupid enough to pull the trigger*, firing a shot into his foot *which he had carelessly rested against it*."

    -fixed-

I've seen gun guys explain away this sort of thing on their forums by saying, "mistakes happen" or "we all make mistakes." But that's the point, isn't it? Wherever there are guns, there can be accidents, and every gun owner thinks they are smart enough or well-trained enough that it couldn't possibly happen to them. I'm sure the moron who shot his foot would have said the same thing a week ago.

    1. Since we're in a correcting mood, wherever there is life, there can be accidents. You don't trust yourself with a gun? Fine, don't own one. But stop trying to keep me from making my choice.

    2. Go ahead and rest your hunting rifle on your foot, Greg. It's your "choice" to be stupid like this guy, if you wish. Shoot your foot off. Then I'll argue that you shouldn't be allowed to own a gun, either.

    3. "Accidents" should always be seen with quotation marks around it.

    4. Oregonian, I don't do that. I don't advocate for doing that. I just get tired of calls for infringing on rights because a few do silly things.
