The reason some people open carry is to aggravate the cops and other folks who don't like it. More than most gun-rights issues this one brings out the immature side of some gun owners who, like rebellious teenagers, are doing it simply because they can.
In this case, our man did it so he could secretly film the cops making fools of themselves, which they certainly did. Now, is that a big victory for the gun-rights movement. I think not.
We don't see what led to this incident. Open carry is legal in Pennsylvania, and there is no limit on magazine count or type of ammunition.
This is one compromise that I'd be willing to discuss: requiring concealed carry in city limits. Open carry makes sense in the countryside, but I agree that it's best to conceal the weapon when in a crowd.
If we really were talking about reasonable gun laws, this would be one to negotiate on. Mikeb, the problem is that your side wants so many silly laws and so many laws that would infringe on our rights that we can't have a rational conversation about any new restriction. We can't give you an inch because we know that you'll take a mile.
I have free speech, but I can't sing bawdy limericks in church while the sermon's in progress. By the same token, I should be able to carry my firearm wherever I go, but I can see justice in asking me to keep it discreet. As I said, we could be a lot more civil in our discussions with the other side if they would limit themselves to wanting reasonable laws.
The reason why the police are able to do this is because so few people open carry (especially in Philadelphia). I would prefer to see a stricter standard of probable cause that a crime is being committed before officers make stops like this. I found it interesting that the other officer had previously made a stop on this gentleman, yet they stopped him again. It would like pulling over the same car every time you see it just to check that the driver STILL has a driver's license.
Of course you do, but how do you feel about cops being able to stop anyone with zero probable cause that a crime is being committed? This is generally something that is much maligned by liberals, and applied more often against minorities.
Civil liberties only matter to Mikeb's side when they are exercised by minorities against the majority or the government. They only matter when they are liberties that he values.
By contrast, I'm straight, but I support gay marriage. I'm a man, but I support the right of a woman to control her own body. And so forth.
No,open carry is legal in most of Pennsylvania, but one needs to be a CCW holder in Philadelphia before one can openly carry.
"Anyone whom can legally own a firearm in the commonwealth can openly carry, on foot, with the exception of court facilities, federal buildings, motor vehicles and cities of the first class
Those person possessing a valid License to Carry Firearms are also permitted to carry openly (or concealed) while in a vehicle and in cities of the first class."
Philly is the only "City of the First Class" in PA. The cops had every right to check the person's carry status.
Somehow, I notice that no one is familiar with Frank Rizzo.
I seriously doubt this shit would have happened in his day.
Something called a Philly Tune Up comes to mind.
There is also a rather fast ride in a paddy wagon which is another Philadelphia custom. Since there are no seat belts and the seats are slippy. It's hard to brace oneself in a wild ride.
Get the picture?
TS, do you know how many Philly cops have been shot in the past few years?

We secretly like open carry because it makes you guys look like the dopes you are.
DeleteWait, you just said you want to see it prohibited like in California. Do you secretly like it, or want to see it banned?
DeleteBoth. I'm complicated like that, TS.
DeleteGreg, Thats BS. Compromise? I think a person should freely carry how every they want to CC or OC.

ReplyDeleteI'd prefer to see a law prohibiting open carry, like in CA. It would be in your best interest too. These open carry protesters make you all look bad.

So, Laci, you offer examples of police brutality as evidence that the police were right in this video? You and E.N. have a certain affinity, I see.
