Dumbing down of the US.

The US has long had a strong anti-intellectual tendency, perhaps it is due to populism.  Lately, there has been a dislike of the "educated elite" and their "expertise", which somehow translates into unquestioning acceptance of things which are plain off bullshit.

In this case:  creationism.

The United States ranks 33rd in the world in acceptance in the scientific notion of evolution. Yes, 33rd! Just ahead of the Turks but behind Cyprus and Latvia. In a 2005 survey adults were asked to respond to the statement: “Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals.” Only 40% of U.S. citizens responded, true.

In 2013 another survey asked, “Humans and other living things have evolved over time.” Only 43% of those who identified as Republicans agreed. This was down from 54% in 2009. An 11% decline in 4 years.

Among Democrats 67% answered true while 65% of Independents agreed. Pew’s researchers said party differences remained when other factors — such as the racial and ethnic composition of the political groups, and religious and educational background — were taken into account.

That's pretty bad, but it might explain why other silly beliefs have taken hold in US society.

  2. Yet, #1 in Nobel peace prizes.....
Three times more than any other country on the planet, hell Israel has more prizes that all the the Islamic nations combined.

Why don't all those deep intellectual Muslim countries have more "prizes"?????

Shit, when you weed out participation prize that Carter got and Obama's special needs award that's still a pretty good showing....

    1. Look, Asshole, I've spent my career educating students so they can be better citizens and have good jobs. Over the years, I've run into many of them who tell me that my classes changed their lives. That's one of the things I've done to make this world better. What have you done to justify your miserable existence?

By, buy, bye, the way, I often purposely misspell, so you have something to talk about. Otherwise you have nothing but lies and criminal acts you talk about and promote.
      Next lie.

    2. Hey guys how's it going?
Steve, I am the Steve they named you after. I have a Google account. I have never been to Rational Nation. Gee, there are so few Steves in the world, it could only be me, or Steve, or maybe Jim, or Kevin, or Sally, or anon....
You have correctly named these fools Steve, asshole lying criminal cowards.
Keep up the great comments Steve and all. I gave up on these liars a long time ago.

    3. Google Account Steve, why do you think I chose the name "Steve" when anonymous asked to be named?

    4. Steve, given your lack of civility, you weren't missed. In fact, you could go away again.

    6. Steve here provides an example of the nature of gun control freaks. He's vile, foul-mouthed, filled with rage, and always ready to lie about people he disagrees with.

By all means, Steve, continue behaving this way. You only make it harder for your side to gain any ground by your actions.

    7. And you are the image of a gun loon. A hillbilly idiot who passes on his idiocy to his students. A real man who calls women names, in print on this blog no less. I read your criminal quotes when you first made them. Thanks to Steve we are reminded just what a criminal scum bag you are. It's really a sign of a liar, to avoid explaining his own words; in fact you won't even confirm they are your words, even though there are still printed for anyone to read. You need a delousing.

  7. Laci,

Do you know why so many people reject evolution? Because it is a farce.

The reason that it is taking so long to refute evolution is because few people understand Chemistry, Nuclear Physics, Biology, Information Theory, Geology, and Astronomy. People who do understand those disciplines, however, can see that evolution makes no sense whatsoever.

For example one basic tenant of evolution is that tiny changes happen over time which enables some critter to better adapt to their environment, as long as the change that happens in their environment happens slowly -- over the course of millions of years. Newsflash: nothing happens slowly on Earth over millions of years. The Earth's tilt varies over a 41,000 year cycle. That alters the climatic conditions over the entire planet every 20,500 years -- way too fast for tiny, slow changes to keep up. Furthermore, continents drift all over the place. What were once tropical locations are at cold northern latitudes today. What were once rainforests are now deserts and vice versa.

Dating techniques are bogus. People acquired samples from the areas surrounding Mount St. Helens after its eruption. We know that those samples are less than 40 years old. And yet various universities dated those samples from 1000s of years old to millions of years old. Furthermore, carbon dating requires assumptions about the amount of carbon 14 in the atmosphere in the past. And yet no one has any way of knowing how much carbon or carbon 14 were in the atmosphere thousands much less millions or billions of years ago. Furthermore, carbon 14 dating can only go back to something like 100,000 years in the past.

And the notion that "tiny changes" leading to adaptations over time is silly on its face if you understand the complexity of DNA. No one has any idea which A, C, T, and/or Gs in an animal's DNA to alter so that a cat slowly turns into a dog or whatever on the "evolutionary tree". Furthermore, saying that the environment can alter DNA to create a useful adaptation is like claiming that slow, incremental, random changes to a computer's hard drive can turn Windows XP operating system into Windows 7 operating system.

And then we have geological oddities such as the Laetoli footprints. Those create two serious problems for evolution. First, the fact that we have human footprints in rock demonstrates that geological processes exist which can create rock instantly in terms of geological time scales. That means any number of other geological features -- historically assumed to take thousands or millions of years -- used to establish geological time scales are completely unreliable. More importantly, the human footprints are next to DINOSAUR footprints which is impossible according to evolution.

Here is yet another problem. Scientists have discovered soft tissue in dinosaur fossils. This is an utter impossibility if the fossils are tens of millions of years old. Amazingly, rather than admit that it is impossible for soft tissue to exist after 60 million years, paleontologists are claiming that some unknown process preserves soft tissues basically forever. In case anyone doesn't understand the implication, the existence of soft tissue means that dinosaurs are at most a few thousand years old, which totally wrecks evolution. This latest example makes it clear: so called evolution scientists are not examining the data to discover the truth, they have a preconceived "truth" and keep hoping to discover the data that supports it.

There are plenty more problems with Geology and evolution. These few tidbits should get you started on your road to discovering the truth ... and discovering that evolution is a farce.

  8. I was raised by creationists, but early on, I read people like Sagan, Asimov, and Gould who taught me the sciences of biology and astronomy. And despite what Laci is implying here, I accept the scientific truths of the Big Bang, evolution, and climate change.
