California Man Shoots Sea Lion

The NewYork Times reports on the fisherman who shot a sea lion.

YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) -- A Sacramento fisherman accused of shooting a sea lion in the head has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of cruelty to animals.

Larry Legans, 43, entered the plea Monday in a Sutter County courtroom.

Authorities say Legans fired his shotgun at the sea lion along the Sacramento River because he was tired of watching the protected animals take his fish.

The 300-to-500-pound animal was spotted with a gunshot wound on a dock in Sacramento on Nov. 11. Authorities say they arrested Legans after a fisherman reported seeing him shoot the sea lion.

The animal is recovering at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, where officials say its condition has stabilized. It could eventually be released back into the wild.

In California, where they have the strictest gun control laws in the country, according to the Brady Campaign, are fishermen allowed to have shotguns with them at the river bank? Are shotguns exempted from all the rules and regulations?

More importantly, I wonder how common this kind of behavior is. He sounds like one of those guys who shouldn't have a gun in the first place. What do you think?

Holy shit! MikeB actually got something right which Democommie seems to have trouble grasping.

  2. If sea lions are eating HIS fish he should be able to dispose of them the same way a farmer would kill coyotes, wolves, or wild dogs who were attacking or killing his livestock.

  3. Have you ever seen the teeth on one of those fuckers. Sealions are very dangerous and I can, like, totally understand why a guy would shoot one for stealing his fish. Why, back in the olden day, rustlers was hanged for stealing horses. I'd say that pinnipedal perp got 'zackly what he had comin'!

  4. Mike W., I didn't have the impression the sea lion was taking HIS fish, but rather he was a fisherman competing with the sea lion for the same fish. He did what any normal gun owner would do when frustrated, he shot the sum bitch.

What's most interesting is your defending him. Don't you usually disown these guys when the misuse their guns? Aren't I the one who keeps pointing out that you gun owners are all a part of the same fraternity?

  5. Aside from the fact sea lions are protected animals, this is no different than shooting squirrels who loot bird feeders. It's non-issue unless you're an animal rights extremist or anti-gunloon.

  6. No, he didn't do what a normal gun owner would do--He did what the liberal stereotype of a gun owner would do.

Shotguns are among the least regulated of modern guns. In some ways this is odd, because they are only exempt from being "destructive devices" through bureaucratic recognition as being suitable for sporting purposes.

And this MikeB is why we say you live in la-la land.

Of course we know that when you make moronic statements like that above what you're really saying it "He did what I would have done when angry and frustrated, shot the sum bitch.

Classic projection. You can't control your emotions and act responsibly, so you assume that no one else can either. Reality of course proves you wrong.

If gun owners and CCW holders were as unstable as you all claim and acted the way you portray all of us there would be AMPLE evidence of it. The evidence shows exactly the opposite.

Of couorse part of that is that you have little to no exposure to the gun owning, carrying community outside of the criminal element, what you hear in the news, and the narrative you parrot straight from Helmke, Sugarmann & their ilk.

  8. Sealions are not eating HIS fish. Jesus Christ, do you have a functional brain?

You love stats and facts, here's one for you. All pinnipeds are protected, by federal law (http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/mammals/pinnipeds/_).

Unfortunately for the marine mammals, who cannot read and therefor do not know their rights, they have to rely on the decency of humans, something which they can't always count on.

  9. Mike W. says I'm projecting my own tendencies when I write stuff like this.

"He did what any normal gun owner would do when frustrated, he shot the sum bitch."

That's not true at all. But it's also not true that I think "normal gun owners" do this. But some of you do, that's always been my point. Do you need to reread my Famous 10% post again to know how I stand on this stuff?
