I think you guys are full of it. Most young servicemen don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. They join for all the wrong reasons. They end up in wars that old politicians, who usually have not served, cook up. It has nothing to do with the Constitution or service to the country. Some of them end up dying in the process, many more come home damaged. They weren’t the valiant heroes you’re pretending they were, they were lost children.
Look at the last 5 or 6 “official” wars this country has fought and the last 20 or so unofficial actions. Are they something to be proud of? I think we should honor the war-resisters and the conscientious objectors. They’re the ones with real principles.

More Thoughts on Remembrance Day
My comment on The Truth About Guns in response to a enough jingoism to bring the house down.

Spoken as a veteran.
ReplyDeleteMikeB your argument is impossible to evaluate because you and I don't have access to the intelligence and facts that the decision-makers had before them.
ReplyDeleteI will say that I am deeply troubled with our frequent military actions and seriously question their necessity.
At first thought, I don't think we should be conducting any military operations unless someone has directly attacked the U.S.
Anonymous/Lint for Brains (the one who refers to itself as "Orlin Sellers"):
DeleteYou where born in a Government hospital, raised in Government schools, nourished by food that traveled on Government roads, and your life, liberty, and property have been guaranteed by a Government Military and Police force. Your life was endowed to you by the collective Government, and like all other 20th century Americans, you are a creation of the State, and a resource subject to the necessity of the collective. You have no reasonable claim against the State to any right to property, (as you would have no such property without the State) liberty, (a concept which is guaranteed by the State) and one life is at the disposal of the collective, to defend and broaden the authority of the United States (Federal Government), it's Political and Financial backers (those who hold claim to Federal debt) and International Governing Bodies which the United States is subject to.

DeleteI was not born in a government hospital, I was not 'raised' nor did I attend a government school and my food did not travel on government roads. Who has lint for brains?
Poor, sick, deluded E.N. I guess you don't make voluntary, mutual exchanges with neighbors, businesses, and associates. That's a shame, because most people live a very peaceful life that is based on mutual consideration. I'd hate to be you.

In my case, E.N., the only government school that I attended was for a graduate level contemporary poetry seminar. I went to private schools for all my other education. Laying that aside, your foolish notion of society is what a tyrant tells his subjects, not what citizens believe.
DeleteYou got smacked around, even with Robert Farago's no flaming policy. You deserved a lot more than you got.
ReplyDeleteI celebrate Armistice Day, the cessation of war, something we will never see under Obama.
ReplyDeleteorlin sellers
The phenomenon of "Peace" is a concept alien to mankind. Peacetime can only exist within the structure of despotism.
DeleteLet's have your definition of peace. This should be fun.
DeletePeace: The subjugation of the individual to the whim of the collective, as necessary to reduce willingness and physical potential to insight and perpetuate violence.
DeleteWTF!!!! You moron. You may just as well have said 'war is peace'.
DeleteAnd it's 'incite' not 'insight'.

I think E.N. is a borg.
DeleteAnonymous, I've wondered about that too. He certainly is un-American.
DeleteGreggy, Mike's right.
ReplyDeleteThe fact Mike got "smacked around" at Farago's site means squat. They're a bunch of chickenhawks like most gunloons.
To a certain extent, we use jingoism and nationalism to mask the fact we take some of our nation's poorest and use them as cannon fodder. If we really and truly wished to honor our servicemen and women, we'd stop sacrificing them needlessly for political gain.
Goldilocks, typically, you missed the point. Mikeb disparaged veterans, not the politicians who send them to war.
DeleteGreggy, I never miss any points; it's a gift.
ReplyDeleteWe are doing servicemen and women a disservice by meaningless displays of jingoism.
