Please say it ain't so. Please say a guy who does something like this won't continue to enjoy his rights to keep and bear arms.
An off-duty New York City correction officer was shot in the arm early Saturday after he ignored orders to drop a loaded 9-millimeter pistol that he had pointed at a group of plainclothes police officers in the Bronx, the authorities said.
The correction officer, Victor Hernandez, 35, was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where he was reported in stable condition on Saturday. He was charged with reckless endangerment and menacing, both misdemeanors, the police said.
Does this "misdemeanor" nonsense mean there are many cases like this in which supposed law-abiding gun owners do violent crimes with guns (pointing a gun at cops and refusing to drop it which results in getting shot is violent in my book)? What do you think?
And, as a minor point, perhaps Eagle-eye Zorro can help us with the use of "correction officer," I'd hate to think the New York Times is dropping the editing ball.

This is on New York. You don't have to worry about "this 'misdemeanor' nonsense" happening very often as it is reserved for "only ones". Had this man not been in law enforcement, he would have been shot or at the very least charged with felonies.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, this "misdemeanor nonsense" is not going to happen to gang members, soccer moms and NFL players. Harsh treatment of gun owners and special treatment for first class citizens is alive and well in New York.

ReplyDeleteNow you want to regulate how much enjoyment people derive from the exercise of their rights?
Is there a bigger control freak on Earth?

ReplyDeleteHe was shot. That was the headline. He was shot in a non-lethal, sorta not-all-that-important kinda way. Which I thought was a fun, comedic commentary on gun violence in general. Then you say he might have been shot, (presumably fatally or at least in a life-threatening injury,) or at the least charged... I more or less agree. He probably would have been shot to the body if he hadn't have been corrections. Then you group gang members, soccer moms and NFL players. Explanation please.
Maybe a reasonable outcome in court might be that he's only allowed to carry as part of his work in the prison.
I agree with FWM. The cops and pseudo-cops protect one another. But this kind of leniency over gun crime is not limited to them, especially in the gun-friendly states.

ReplyDeleteWhat prison allows corrections officers to carry? They disarm everyone, including police officers, before they come in contact with the prisoners.
