Big Shootout in Chicago - 2 Dead, 2 Wounded

The Chicago Tribune reports

Two men were shot to death and two others wounded following a dispute that started in a Calumet City nightclub early Saturday and ended with gunfire outside, police said.

Family members said they believe the man shot to death is Archie Lee Chambers Jr., 20, who had been shooting in the air before being shot by police.

Friends told Chambers’ sister, Arshanette Chambers, 21, that Chambers and other friends had been at a car club party at What’s Up about 1:30 a.m., when a fight started inside the club and someone began shooting outside the club, killing Chambers' friend and bringing Chambers outside.

Police "did engage the shooter," but the chief did not say that Chambers was the one who had shot the others. White and Chambers were not shot by the police
What's your opinion? Is the solution to arm more of the good guys and let them carry guns in bars? That's the recommendation of the gun-rights crowd.

For me the solution is obvious. Tight restrictions on guns, laws which would choke off the continual gun flow from legitimate gun owners to the young gangsters.

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

  1. But Mikeb, you tell us that you don't want to ban guns. Now you're admitting the truth? You're telling us that you want tight restrictions, not just the minor increase that you've mentioned for a while?

Of course, this happened near Chicago in Illinois. Said state already has many of the restrictions that you want. No one gets to carry a handgun legally, for example. That didn't do any good here, though.

    1. as simple as banning freedom of speech, right KiraSpeaks?

    2. People say that we're afraid because we own and carry guns, but let's look at who's more likely fearful: people who yearn for strict control so nothing scary happens. It's delusional, of course, but that comforts some.

    1. I wish it were that simple. As much as Greg keeps trying to paint me as a gun-banner, I'm not. I would like tight restrictions so unfit people and criminals won't have such easy access to guns like they do now.

    2. Ah, but Mikeb, you used to say that you just want small changes that won't be too much of a burden on good gun owners. Now you're calling for tight restrictions. You also expressed your wish that banning guns were simple. Can you see why we don't trust your supposedly good intentions?

    3. Greg, quit trying to play "gotcha" with me, will ya?

Tight restrictions are what's required. The impact on you would me minimal. This is what I've always said, of course, using different words, but the intent has not changed.

    4. I'm trying to get you to realize that the implication of your proposals would look like Washington, D.C.: few legal gun owners, lots of illegal gun owners, and lots of gun crime.

  5. @ Melissa. The police should've shot him. Under the use of force if the bad guy is acting in a manner where he is a threat to someone's life...bystanders and law enforcement alike...then police escalate their use of force to eliminate or neutralize that threat. No the bad guy does not actually have to be shooting at someone for the police to eliminate the threat. As long as the bad guy is shooting, the police can shoot....it's their job. Plus, this guy was outside shooting with people around him! How stupid. That could have easily turned into an even more tragic outcome. Now look....stupid decisions will lead to not so good results. Police have a split second decision to make when dealing with a fool with a gun and I say good shooting here.

    1. Dumbest statement of the year award goes to Melissa. Just ask him to put down his illegal handgun, he will. "Sir, can you please stop firing rounds into the air, and put down the weapon. Please" LOLOLOLOL

    2. Melissa, you do realize that rounds fired into the air come back down at some point, right? Shooting into the air creates an immediate danger to the lives of others. If one of us had been caught doing that, the authors here would write articles about what horrible people we were.

    3. Ok..ok...ok Melissa if this will make you feel better. Hey Mr & Ms Police Officer...if you're reading this, the next time you come across a really someone who is shooting a gun, would you please ask him or her to kindly place the gun down? (Sarcasm off). Melissa you obviously are ignorant to the fact of the purpose of law enforcement officers and what they are trained when they come across a "fool with a gun"....i say that because everyone that has a gun is not a fool and does not do foolish things with their gun. But if they are faced with a life threatening situation...once again they are trained to prevent any other harm and protect themselves as well as others around and escalate..if they have to...their force to neutralize that threat. We're talking split second decision here...2 maybe 3 seconds!!! No! Not shoot to kill as many of you like to say but neutralize/stop the threat. If the offender expires..oh well then they expire. But you can't walk around here all bad a$$ and do stupid stuff...it never turns out good. If you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

  9. Melissa, it's not "just what the police said"...there were witnesses stating on tv that he was shooting into the air...and you can't do that...idiot!!! Also, were you aware of the fact that he was walking around with a gun and didn't report his a__!!??!! If so, you're just as guilty and helped him to lose his life...dummy!!

  13. Archie did have a gun on him that night in which in defense he pulled out. Before the police arrived at the club Archie witnessed two unknown guys shoot his friend who was defending a young woman being harassed by the unknown guys. Another friend of Archie's was shot several times also trying to break up the fight between the unknown males and his friend all in defense of this young woman. The two unknown men pulled out their guns shot both of Archie's friends which one died at the scene and the other survived. Once the two guys began fleeing then Archie pulled his weapon out and fired the shots into the air. This is when the police pulled up. Once Archie saw the police he did put the gun down and proceeded to try and flee which is when the police fatally shot him. Yes Archie should not have had a weapon but unfortunately he was just simply trying to defend his two friends that THEY shot and ultimately had to pay the price through the hands of the police. Archie was a great person and would help anyone. This all started just because the two unknown men were harassing a female friend.
