Shooting at the Columbia Mall (Maryland)

I had to think if I really wanted to post that there was a mass shooting at the Columbia, Maryland shopping mall, but I thought about it and it makes loads of sense.

If you are unfamiliar with Columbia there was this link below the Baltimore Sun story when I first saw it:

Columbia: 10th most perfect suburb?

This is the start of the Wikipedia Article about Columbia:
Columbia is a planned community comprising 10 self-contained villages, located in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life. Creator and developer James W. Rouse saw the new community in terms of human values, rather than merely economics and engineering. Opened in 1967, Columbia was intended to not only eliminate the inconveniences of then-current subdivision design, but also eliminate racial, religious, and class segregation.
Columbia proper consists only of that territory governed by the Columbia Association, but larger areas are included under its name by the U.S. Postal Service and the census. These include several other communities which predate Columbia, including Simpsonville, Atholton, and in the case of the census, Clarksville. The census-designated place had a population of 99,615 in 2010,[4] making it the most populous community in Maryland after Baltimore.[5]
In other words, Columbia was supposed to be the perfect suburban space.  A place which is family friendly and relatively crime free.  It is a place where people move so they can raise families away from Urban problems.

In other words, this shit ain't supposed to happen in places like Columbia.

But, it does, it can happen anywhere.  That's what this shooting should hit home to you, but I know that you are a little too biased to believe the bullshit you spout without criticism.

Do guns really make people safer?  If that is the case, why are these incidents so common in the US, but not other developed nations?  Why not let the research speak for itself rather than silence it?

It's nice to say things, but not when objective facts contradict them.

  1. This happened in a state that has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, including making it all but impossible for good citizens to carry a handgun legally. Maryland also has some of the most violent cities in this country.

But you tell us that this kind of thing can happen anywhere, while saying elsewhere that taking steps to defend ourselves isn't rational. And you reject studies such as the one cited on this blog by Mark Gius that gun control leads to more murders.

    1. This from the lying asshole who claimed suicides were 50% of gun shot deaths, then 2/3rds, then some other figure. If you were not such a liar people might listen to you, but since you are a proven criminal lying coward people are only laughing at you.

    2. Anonymous, you're typically unworthy of my attention, but since you made an erroneous claim of fact here, I'll answer:

There are some 30,000 deaths each year due to firearms. Of those, about two-thirds are suicides.

Of the suicides each year in this country, about half are from gunshots.

Can you see how those are two different numbers?

    3. Greg, I was travelling during the onslaught of news coverage which probably followed this shooting but what you keep harping on is wrong. The problem is not that good citizens are deprived of owning guns to protect themselves. The problem is that good citizens who do own guns are using them to commit murder. I don't know about this Maryland shooter yet, but often it's a lawful gun owner who does the deed.

Therefore the problem is not that too few people can own guns legally, it's exactly the opposite.

    4. Since the vast majority of us do no wrong with our guns, going after all for the actions of a few makes no sense.

    5. It's you gun loons who keep changing the number, a sure sign you are lying. No surprise since you are proven liars.

    6. "the vast majority........"
This is your reason for stopping efforts to stop 33,000 needless gun shot deaths? Now there's logic for you.
The kind of logic used by killers and criminals.

    7. "Now there's logic for you."

Its the logic of the person committing the crime being punished for it. What if we were to use the same logic with those excercising their rights under their 4th amendment. Say invoking Miranda rights to have evidence suppressed, and not being convicted.
Can we use this as a justifiable argument to restrict those rights?

    8. You lying criminal cowards use that logic to do nothing about the death and injury due to guns. Sick murderous lying cowards.

  2. "And you reject studies such as the one cited on this blog by Mark Gius that gun control leads to more murders."

Greg, that's because Gius's study wasn't included in the "meta-study" of specially chosen studies linked to gun control advocates that show that guns are bad for us.
Maryland seems to have earned a grade of A- from the Brady campaign.

    1. I'm going to use that line in the future--thanks.

    2. Keep pretending that lawful gun owners are almost always responsible. That's just not the case, which makes prefect sense given the incredible ease with which one can own guns.

    3. Mike, I think you mistyped because your comment seems to contradict the one you made only a few minutes earlier.

Actually its been determined that he seems to be legally allowed to purchase a firearm since the shotgun he used to commit this foul deed was purchased at a store in Maryland. So he would have gone through the required NICS background check and whatever hoops required in a state with laws strict enough to earn it a grade of A- from the Brady Campaign.

According to McMahon, Aguilar purchased the shotgun last month at a shop in neighboring Montgomery County.

I would have used the source from Foxnews, but someone there needs to learn to spell Mossberg.

    4. The solution is not let them drive.

  3. "Authorities responding to an active shooting at the Mall in Columbia found three people dead, including one who was found near a shotgun and ammunition."

The law enforcement representative for the press conference made it quite clear that the investigation has just begun, and they had only shortly before managed to clear the mall of people.
