Illinois Man, 14-Year-old Son Hurt in Accidental Shooting

Local news reports

A Marengo man and his 14-year-old son were taken to a hospital after a gun accidentally fired while the man was cleaning it.

Marengo Police Sgt. Paul Fritz said officers responded to the 400 block of Hale Street at 5:20 p.m. to find the man and teen with gunshot wounds. Fritz said the man was cleaning his gun when the weapon fired. The bullet went through the man’s hand and hit the 14-year-old in the arm. The bullet then ricocheted off his arm and struck the teen in the leg.

Fritz said no major arteries were struck and both the man and teenager were taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock to be treated.

No foul play is suspected, Fritz said, but an investigation is ongoing.

"No foul play," did you get that?  Violating two or three of the major safety rules in front of his son, resulting in a negligent discharge and injury isn't considered foul play?  It certainly should be.

I have literally never seen behavior--even irresponsible, negligent, stupid behavior--when there is no intent to cause harm, referred to as "foul play." If you want to redefine "foul play" in such a way that harmful intent is not necessary, go right ahead, but don't expect many English speakers to follow.

    1. Oh really? Well that's convenient for all you guys who resist safe storage of your guns.

I guess I'll take on the unenviable task of attempting to explain the seemingly obvious to the obviously clueless. Who says we "resist safe storage of [our] guns"? We resist mandates of what some idiot decides is the one-size-fits-all "safe" way to store our firearms, without having any knowledge of our situation.

Besides, you're not really arguing, are you, that the accepted definition of "foul play":

      1. Intentionally violent or injurious behavior, especially that suggestive of a criminal act.

. . . is motivated by some nefarious desire to shield irresponsible gun owners from your vitriol?

Oh, one more thing--what the hell does an unintentional shooting while the gun owner is cleaning his gun have to do with "safe storage"?

    3. Aren't all laws one size fits all? All people have to follow the law.
I guess you gun loons feel you should be an exception.

    4. You're right again, Kurt. Safe storage and safe handling are two different things, both of which should be mandated by law with violations punished.
