The Obvious Problem with Open Carry

  1. Um-is it any easier to distinguish the good guys from the bad with concealed carry?

  2. They do love to trot out the guy carrying the AR when generating their memes. I'm fairly sure that those who routinely open carry long arms are very small simply because its a pain in the fourth point of contact, speaking from prior experience.
And of course, the MOMs, who seem to have taken the lead in opposing open carry push no carry at all, not simply open carry or even open carry of long arms. When they try to pressure companies, they insist on the company banning all legal carry, not just open carry. Though, as evidenced by Kroger, it hasn't been going their way lately.

  3. If open carry is so dangerous, then why does every police officer in the country open carry their firearm while on duty? Seems like the police are intentionally endangering the public by their mere presence.

    1. Even the police, in my opinion, are inadequately trained. But, you civilian gun nuts are even worse. That's the problem.

    2. MikeB, I will partially agree with your comment as required agency sponsored training often leaves something to be desired unless your on something like SWAT or WST, but, and I speak only for myself and my experiences, most cops I know do a lot of training off duty as well as attending classes and matches on their own time and dine. And it has been my experience that the average civilian shooter trains substantially more than the average cop, assuming the cop relies on agency provided training.

So with adequate training, open carriers can make it instantly clear to the fearful Demanding Moms that they aren't there to shoot anyone?

    4. MikeZ, I don't doubt that many cops do the needed training on their own, as do many gun owners. But unless it's mandatory the percentages are going to be too low. There are too many who don't avail themselves of it.

    5. Part of the problem with making any LE training mandatory is the cost, budgets are tight and in most cases it makes more sense to use the money for other training or resources, while I disagree with that sentiment it's a simple fact. And I do agree that not enough officers do avail themselves of additional training but it often becomes an issue of where the dollars go, do they spend it on the training that will be used and tested on nearly a daily basis or do they spend it on the training that in reality, the vast majority of officers will never apply. Because belive it or not the vast majority of officers will never find themselves in a shooting and it's not uncommon for a significant percentage of officers to nearly never draw their weapon.

  4. We have the same “obvious problem” with uniformed police officers. How does a young African American man know which ones are there to “serve and protect” and which ones are white racists, or “white Hispanic” racists who will shoot them in the back?

    1. Absolutely right. So, you're conclusion is to increase the problem with civilian open carry?

  5. Lets keep in mind that open carry is a problem pretty much only in the collective minds of those who are trying to pressure companies into banning it. The MOMs love to post memes of things that stores don't allow next to someone carrying the requisite long arm for more scare value. So the question is, if it were an honest to god problem on their property, perhaps even affecting profits, they would have no problem posting according to local law as is their right.
But they aren't doing that. And the pressure tactics used by the MOMs is becoming increasingly ineffective in light of being consistently ignored by Kroger which has just reported increasing profits.

    1. The problems with open carry are several, and they're certainly not limited to what's in our minds.
