Ridiculous NRA Conspiracy Theory Claims Obama Will Ban All Ammo

Media Matters

National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre relied on numerous falsehoods to claim that President Obama will move to ban sales of all firearm ammunition before he leaves office, thus making "the very real nightmare of every single gun owner in this country" a reality.

In the May issue of the NRA's magazine, America's 1st Freedom, LaPierre wrote, "President Barack Obama is setting the table to ban your ammunition -- all of it," and claimed that "the remaining two years of Obama's term pose the greatest threat ever to the Second Amendment and our freedom."

  1. Attempting to restrict ammunition to further restrict gun rights certainly didn't start with our current president. There was a similar effort during the Clinton administration, authored by Chuck Schumer I believe.
Considering that the President made a big thing about using executive actions to address the gun violence issue, its not a big stretch to imagine that various agencies that work for him would put on their thinking caps to try to further his goals. Unfortunately, when the good idea fairy visits the ATF, things don't normally go well.
The concept of banning or severely taxing ammunition is also frequently bandied about by gun control advocates. And since these taxes, commonly called sin taxes are openly intended to reduce or eliminate whatever behavior that has irked the powers that be, its intent when applied to firearms isn't a mystery.
As I've said before, the rhetoric used by the NRA isn't at all different than that used whenever there are limits proposed on other individual rights, be they free speech, reproductive, etc.
