Helmke on the Traver Appointment

In his Huffington Post article, Paul Helmke strongly supported the nomination of Andrew Traver to head up the ATF. He equally denounced the NRA for running interference through their lobbying machine.

What I found interesting was the point that the difference between automatic and semi-automatic is minimal.

The NRA bosses don't dispute the AK's murderous capabilities or argue the fact that assault weapons are the mayhem-spreading gun of choice for drug dealers and gang members. Nor do they quarrel with Traver over the notion that stray bullets kill and maim innocent Americans with nauseating regularity.

No, the NRA bosses are all tied up in knots because Traver didn't make it clear enough to the TV audience that a fully automatic weapon (like the one the reporter apparently blasted) can get a few rounds out more quickly than a semi-automatic and is not as readily available to the general public (although they would like it to be).
What's your opinion? Do you agree with his assessment of the two types of assault rifles, the semi- and the fully-automatic? Isn't is sometimes said that the semi-auto version is more deadly because the shooter has increased control and he doesn't run out of ammo so quickly?

So… full auto should be legal then? Or ALL semi-autos illegal? Or maybe the real killer is bolt actions, because that makes the shooter really stop and aim. One thing we know, it is doesn’t have anything to do with those “assaulty-type” features.

I am disappointed that Mr. Traver appears to know nothing about guns. I hope his knowledge on smoking products and adult beverages makes up for it. His claims that “assault weapons” are less controllable and kill more innocent bystanders is not on the same page with the Bradys who claim “those” guns are MORE controllable during rapid fire than “normal” guns.

  2. Less bullets, less guns, less death and injury. Limit the manufacture and sales. Make as many types of guns illegal as humanly possible. Just to save one life. DGUs are a myth. That's the first thing my parents and my community taught me as a child.

Mike B. Tireless crusader. What kind of idiot would support the manufacture of AK47s? I don't want to know.

You meth dealers and gangstas, go ahead and keep your guns. You're gonna need 'em.

  3. Flying Junior for Director of the ATF. It might be an improvement.

  4. There are no two types of assault rifles. There is only one kind: Fully automatic.

As for Traver, a polarizing, high profile enemy is a good thing for the gun rights movement. His appointment just means even more gun and ammo sales. Even more "assault weapon" owners and more money for the NRA.

  5. TS, I'm afraid I've already nominated Laci for the position. I guess Obama didn't get the memo.

About the full- vs. semi-auto rifles, I'd say it's good that the full-auto ones are restricted. I'm not sure what to do about the others. I recognize the problem in distinguishing between the so called "assault weapons" and all the others which function essentially the same way.

Maybe you hit on the right answer, ban all of 'em except the single-shot bolt-action ones.

I respect that level of honestly. Helmke will praise Traver for concluding that “assault weapons are evil”, even though his points run contrary to why Helmke says “assault weapons are evil”. Doesn’t matter though- the point is “assault weapons are evil”.
