The Colbert County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting that landed a 14 year old boy in the hospital.Day after day, the hits just keep on comin'.
Sheriff Ronnie May says the teen was shot by a 13 year old boy. We're told the victim was hit in the neck with a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle.
Yet, the gun-rights boys keep tellin' us how few these are. I keep tellin' them how preventable they are.

What you’ve been told is that there are roughly 80 accidental deaths by firearm of people under the age of 18 per year according to the CDC. Have you counted more than that?
ReplyDeleteI really think I am in the process of documenting more than that. Time will tell. Does 80 sound about right to you?
DeleteWell, I don’t think the CDC is in the pocket of the NRA and lying to the public about this, so yeah it sounds right. You think you are in the process of documenting more than that? How about you add them up starting with 2012? Tell us what we are at for the year.

DeleteJeez TS, you're going to have to give him some time. He's going to have to find at least three other people and convince them to let him use their fingers and toes to get to that high of a number.
Well, we've chronicled 158 accidents involving kids (17 and under) so far this year, over at Kid Shootings blog. How many are fatal, I'm not sure. I'd have to tally it. Here's a link to them all:

Of course, those represent only the small amount of the many, many alerts we get, most of which we don't have time to go through. Likely this is only a small percentage of cases, even among those reported to the media.
DeleteThanks for the great work, Baldr.
DeleteWhether it's eighty or 200 or 500, that's still a small number in comparison to the total population, the number of gun owners, and the number of guns in this country. Besides, you claim that you have the solution, but we know better.
ReplyDeleteTN has taken to posting the road fatality count on their electronic road signs. As of this past weekend TN has had 402 road fatalities this year. That doesn't count the injuries or accidents with no injuries or just near misses... I bet the true rate off illegal car use is over 10,000,000 every year in TN.
