Mayor Bloomberg on New York's Recent Shootings

via Politicker

After the third police shooting in recent weeks, the mayor had this to say.

“The three shooters have at least one thing in common and that is that they possessed their guns illegally, and that is true for nearly every shooting that occurs in our city,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “As long as federal laws allow guns to flow onto our streets, criminals will be able to get them and police officers will be in danger.”
The mayors of Newark, New Jersey and Chicago, Illinois could say the same thing: " they possessed their guns illegally, and that is true for nearly every shooting that occurs in our city."  But, not the mayors of New Orleans, St. Louis or Seattle. You know why? Because the gun laws in New York and Newark and Chicago work. In those other places, not only are there frequent criminal shootings of illegally owned guns, but there are also frequent shootings by CCW permit holders and other legal gun owners, domestic shootings for instance, the so-called castle-doctrine shootings which are really criminal.

By adopting similarly strict standards in all the states, say by federal law, not only would the gun flow be mainly eliminated, but the misdeeds of the supposed law abiding gun owners would be diminished as well.

  1. You really need to back up naked lies like frequent shootings by CCW permit holders and castle-doctrine shootings that are criminal--that's what I think. You show us criminal shootings from time to time, but you have little to no evidence that concealed carry licensees are committing unjustified shootings with their guns, and the same is true for shootings in a home that are claimed as justified under the castle doctrine. Prove it--that's what I say.

  2. Yeah, just ignore that Florida CCW fatality in church.

Because of course you CCW guys all take your guns to church with you because you just never know when between prayers and doughnuts and coffee over Bible Study you might have an URGENT need to show off your guns.

People like Greg believe that is MORE important than people having a right not to be shot in the head from the next room while in church. They don't want genuine freedom, they want their selfish fetish objects to overrride everyone else's rights and freedom.

I'll take the police concerns about castle doctrine as a reasonable basis for the mistakes and claims of unjustified violence as sufficient proof. When making those assertions against Castle doctrine changes, the cops give plenty of specific examples.

    1. You give a tiny number of incidents and apply them to all of us who carry a handgun. That's called a hasty generalization. I've asked you this before: What's the threshold percentage for CCW errors? Five percent? One percent? 0.1%? At what point will you say that enough of us are safe to stop trying to take away our license to carry?

But then you claim that cops give examples. The police are hired by the government to enforce the law. Many of them have to say what they're told to say by some politician looking for votes. If you claim that the castle doctrine in many states has become a problem, show me actual cases of clear wrong in which the homeowner claimed castle doctrine, but that was not the case. Don't bring up domestic violence under this category, since that's a different case altogether. Then answer the same question: What percentage is too high?

    1. Isn't it fascinating how the argument stays the same over the decades? Note that Mencken says everything that we say here daily, including a mention of how gun control violates the Second Amendment. Now, how could he have said that, since no one in the years gone by though that the amendment names an individual right?
