Handguns - Number 1 Killer of Kids in California

8 comments:

  1. 2010, California, CDC
    Motor Vehicle Deaths 172
    Firearm Deaths 169
    age range 0-17

I guess they have a different definition of 'kids'.

  2. Wait, I am confused. I thought California was the Brady Campaign golden child with a whopping 81 on their state scorecard.

    http://www.bradycampaign.org/stategunlaws/scorecard/CA

"Once again, California holds the top spot with the nation’s strongest gun laws that help combat the illegal gun market, prevent the sale of guns without background checks and REDUCE RISKS TO CHILDREN, according to the Brady Campaign." [emphasis mine]

    Integrated or external locks
    Safe Storage Laws
    No Guns on Campus
    Disarm Prohibited Handgun Possessors

This surely cannot be correct ... because if so it just might mean that all of these feel good laws do very very little in actuality to protect kids.

  3. Well California does not report abortion statistics to the CDC anymore, but I think it is safe to say that abortion is the leading killer of those under the age of 18 in California and probably most other states as well.

  4. Shame on you mikeb302000. Badthink Billy is right. There were THREE MORE KIDS KILT WIT TEH KARZ THEN WIT TEH GUNZ!!

Of course a rational person might conclude that considering California has about 32,000,000 vehicles registered in or paying a fee to operate withig its boundaries* and that Californians have an enviable traffic safety/driving related deaths record compared to the national average (2009 figures CA .95 deaths per 100M miles driven compare to a national average of 1.14 in the same period**) that there might be NO FUCKING VALID COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO SETS OF STATISTICS.

But, since I know that Billy and Greggy and Orlon Zipper and a few others just sorta roll thataway, the numbers are there to check.

As is usual when Brainless Billy or Greggy Campedoutinthewoodzwitmygunz are making a point they cite things without links. I spent a few minutes looking but couldn't find the specific data that Billy was using to support his assertion. You can piss'n'moan all you want, boyz, but insufficient citation is not your pal.

Even assuming that the numbers are accurate someone who knows how critical thinking works (and has a shred of intellectual rigor or honesty between their ear protectorz) would want to know if the two figures are based on anything comparable in terms of use and exposure.

The answer to that question is,"No, of course they're not. The number of vehicle miles driven, the fact that motor vehicles are driven purposefully in widely variant situations and by drivers who have no control over any vehicle but their own v people shooting kids or unsupervised kids shooting themselves or each other have NOTHING to do with each other.".

I don't know if you have any friends in the pharma business but if you could find someone who'd make salve for teh Burnin' Stoopit, you could sell it on your blog and make a brazilliojillian dollahs!

    1. I see you're back on the booze, democommie. I cited my source as CDC. Even if I did put a link to the CDC website, you don't know how to use WISQARS, so it would be pointless.

demodrunkard said...that there might be NO FUCKING VALID COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO SETS OF STATISTICS."

I'm not sure who you're slurring your words at, but it was CA Wellness Foundation making the comparison, I was pointing out that their information is wrong. Once you sober up, you might want to give them a call and let them know how you feel.

and I'd say that Jim is, as usual, completely full of shit. He might refute this of course, as soon as he finds the California or U.S. statute equating a medical procedure (abortion) with a homicide (murder or manslaughter). Sorry, Jimbo, you're gonna stay full of shit on this one.

  6. Democommie, does Rosetta Stone offer a course in your language? Whatever you speak, English it ain't.

  7. Demo - There are plenty of people that die during medical procedures. Just because their deaths are not crimes does not mean they are not dead.
