Police found Suarez at his residence and, after obtaining a search warrant, also discovered a .32-caliber handgun there. Police also found other rifles, a shotgun that had its barrel partially sawed off, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
In addition to the two aggravated assault charges, Suarez faces one count of possession of a controlled weapon because of the sawed-off shotgun, as well as marijuana and paraphernalia charges, Clemens said.
Do you think this guy will lose his right to own guns? Do you think he should?
If this keeps up, the Dakotas will be right up there with the rest of the country. But, one thing for sure is you can't go by what stories make it into the main stream media. New Orleans for instance, is practically never in the news for gun incidents. Other than those Katrina shootings on the bridge by the cops, there's nothing. Yet, NOLA is one of the deadliest cities in the country.
Compare that to Chicago or Baltimore. Every single day you can read about their gun troubles. What do you think accounts for this disparity? It's odd, isn't it?

"...a shotgun that had its barrel partially sawed off.."
ReplyDeleteSo it was only cut halfway through? It's been sawn down or it hasn't.
"What do you think accounts for this disparity?"
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Chicago and Baltimore have "commonsense" gun regulations, yet experiences so much violence in comparison to places without "commonsense" gun regulations.
"But, one thing for sure is you can't go by what stories make it into the main stream media."
ReplyDeleteReally, why not?
Are you saying that you get these news stories from some place other than the mainstream media? Or are you refering to national media outlets like MSNBC and CNN and FOX as mainstream, but ignoring the AP and Reuters? Do you mean only national news programs, and are you ignoring local papers and local tv?
I'm just curious, because checking out any local news outlet that serves any metropolitan area, you'll find all kinds of stories that simply don't make the cut for the national news outlets. Do people in Cincinnati give crap about some guy arrested for arson in Bend, Oregon? But if that same guy burned a dealership full of Hummers and SUVs, it starts to pick up interest as a story to people nationwide.
Shootings, rare as they are in the Dakotas, are more likely to make the national scene simply because of their rarity there.
In point of fact, places like Chicago and Baltimore are no more dangerous than Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteAnd you consider that a point in your favor, Jade?
ReplyDeleteMike: “But, one thing for sure is you can't go by what stories make it into the main stream media.”
ReplyDeleteHalleluiah! What made you come around?
Mikey W: Not necessarily.
ReplyDeleteBut you gunloons like to pretend cities like Chicago are Thunderdome-style death zones while cities with far laxer gun laws have more gun violence.
Gunloons don't like to admit that gun-friendly New Orleans has about 4 times the murder rate than Chicago.
This kind of dishonesty really points up the fact that you really don't care about gun violence, Mikey W.
Jade, this may come as a surprise to you, but most major metropolitan areas have crime. It is because of that crime that most "gunloons" will carry a gun.
ReplyDeleteAs for the murder rate, let's mention some relevant factors, such as a drastically reduced population (due to Katrina), police cuts (due to Katrina) and the fact that NOLA has historically been a dangerous city.
NOLA has a population under half a million. Chicago has a population of almost 3 million. NOLA recorded 264 murders at last report. Chicago was 448 for the same report.
Neither city is "safe."
As for "gun violence," you are right, most pro-gun people do not care about "gun violence." Violence in general is far more concerning. If a violent criminal wants to kill you, are you really concerned whether you die by a knife, a baseball bat, a gun, or a fall from a tall building?
And lastly, Jade, Mike W is not the only person who refers to you as "Jade" instead of Jadegold.
But, if you want to keep calling every anonymous poster Mike W, I'm sure most of us would see it as a compliment.
Here's what I'm talking about. In the Google Alerts which I've set up for "gun" and "shooting" I almost never see anything about New Orleans, but every day there's Chicago. Why?
ReplyDeleteIf this keeps up, the Dakotas will be right up there with the rest of the country.
ReplyDeleteNo it won't. I would wager that South Dakota has near the highest gun ownership rate in the country. I lived there for much of my life and I can tell you that damn near every household has at least one gun. Yet the homicide rate involving guns is rather low.
And your theory about a media conspiracy is laughable as well. In South Dakota the newspapers don't have a whole lot to write about. A shooting is big news that all of the little newspapers would be all over.
"In the Google Alerts which I've set up for "gun" and "shooting" I almost never see anything about New Orleans, but every day there's Chicago. Why?"
ReplyDeleteAsk Google. It's their system.
I have a few guesses, but that is all they are. NOLA is an empty city, with it's current population a guess more than a hard number. Estimates range from 1/2 of what it was prior to Katrina, to about where it was prior to Katrina.
Chicago is quite a bit larger, and had media outlets everywhere, constantly digging for every story. It is a major city for manufacture and industry. Plus, looking at the numbers, there is at least one murder a day there, no matter what the method.
Jade: “Gunloons don't like to admit that gun-friendly New Orleans has about 4 times the murder rate than Chicago.”
ReplyDeleteDo a whole post on New Orleans- I dare you. I’d love to discuss it in detail. I’ll even give you a preview of my talking points so you can be prepared:
1) You’ve used the term “skyrocketing” to describe their crime rates. Since we are talking about a change in their crime rates, what pro-gun laws were passed or gun-control laws stricken that coincided with the skyrocket? Could there be another well accepted reason like a natural disaster that severely altered the makeup of the city?
2) What is your explanation for when DC was the murder capitol? Why was the murder capitol dismissed then, but an indictment against lax gun laws now that another city passed them?
3) Why is first place your only measure (so long as it is not DC), when the 2nd place murder city hails from the strictest gun laws state in the country?
4) Over and over again, we see signs of no correlation. You have lax-law/high crime cities & states, tight law/low crime, lax law/low crime, and of course tight law/high crime. You have never been able to show ANY correlation, you just point to areas that you want to point to and ignore the ones you want to ignore.
There you have it. I’ve admitted that New Orleans is crime infested. What are you going to admit?
I'm not suggesting a conspiracy with that Google observation, it's just interesting. I did wonder if there was some kind of agreement to not portray NOLA in a bad light so as to help their recovery, but that would be a conspiracy.
