North Dakota Courtroom Incident

This is an interesting story, first because it happened in that gun paradise North Dakota, but also because in the courthouse there the metal detector was only used on occasion. That's interesting.

Another fun aspect of this story is that the bad guy failed to kill or injure people, not because there were armed guards and police nearby, but because he couldn't work the action on the gun. If he'd known of the old "locked and loaded" theory of readiness, there's no telling what would have happened.

What's your opinion?  Please leave a comment.

  2. In Oregon, firearms are only legally prohibited to people with a CHL from Circuit Court or above. Meaning that I can (and have) carried my concealed handgun into City and Justice courts the few times I've had to go into them.

The Circuit courts all have full security with metal detectors in use all the time. I have no problem with that because it's an ENFORCED gun-free zone. Unenforced "gun free zones" aren't worth the paper the signs are printed on.

  3. Interesting. Is the difference between enforced and unenforced the metal detector?

  4. @Mikeb, Yes. If you have an enforced gun free zone, there is actual security in place to ensure nobody gets in with a gun. Limited points of entry, metal detectors, empty your pocket and take off your belt is the mandatory practice at my local Circuit Courthouse. When such measures (although not guaranteed 100%) are in place, I have no qualms with leaving my firearm in the car (although if I ride my motorcycle, I'm kindof screwed, since they have no lockers to put my gun in).

Other places that just have a "no guns" sign are worthless. There's no physical barrier to prevent someone willing to disobey the law, is there? It's not enforced UNLESS the violator is spot-checked or otherwise is identified as having a firearm.

Unfortunately, that's too often when he starts shooting at people with it.
