No Jail for Tennessee Gal Who Brought her Gun to NYC

The New York Post reports on what we predicted. When the story hit, the rabid Bloomberg-haters among the pro-gun crowd said this poor gun owner would be made an example of.  They were prepared to elevate Meredith Graves to the status of martyr.

The end result proves that the laws in New York are in place to stop gun trafficking and not punish ordinary gun owners regardless of how stupid or ignorant they might be.

Sometimes you just forget the handgun is in your bag.

A registered nurse and fourth-year med student from Knoxville took a no-jail time deal yesterday for the Tennessee-registered gun she had absentmindedly carried to the 9/11 Memorial last December.

Pretty, hazel-eyed Meredith Graves admitted through her lawyer that she had merely forgotten that the little .22-caliber handgun was in her purse.

She was busted when she tried to check the weapon with memorial security personnel.
“It was completely inadvertent,” Graves’ lawyer, Daniel Horwitz, said after his client took her plea.

This sounds like a really good reason not to let her have a gun.

    1. I would have to agree with you on this one

    2. "Let her" have a gun, you misogynistic fucking pig? Any other aspects of her life you need to compulsively control?

    3. Misogyny does not enter into it. Someone who is stupid enough or ignorant enough to do what she did, should love their right to own guns.

I agree with the no jail time, though.

    4. Your hatred of guns trumps your willingness for women to make their own choices. Hoplophobia is poisonous to your liberal view and that explains why you are so despised on dailyKos.

    5. That's bullshit. My post about Guns and Women is one of my most popular. You must remember that one, it's where Hemenway showed what happens to women in high-gun states.

Daily Kos diaries about guns are controlled by 2A fanatics. That's why I got kicked off there. Those guys don't accept a dissenting voice, they run you out of town. They're all about freedom, you see.

  2. In other words, Bloomberg didn't want the face of a good citizen attached to the Senate companion bill to H.R. 822.

  3. You act as if though it was no big deal for Graves and Jerome. They were arrested. They had their property confiscated. They had to hire lawyers and spend who knows how much money. And they pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge that in your world would disqualify them from gun ownership for life, at the very least revoke their license to carry. How many times have we heard complaints about people with permits who have a mere arrest with no plea and no conviction? If it were only intended for bad guys, they would have just held onto their guns and given them a phone number to arrange to have it shipped back to them. You’re right, Bloomberg doesn’t want to turn them into martyrs. That is his selfish reason- not any compassion for legitimate gun owners.

    1. They broke the law, TS. That's the only thing you left out.

Your assigning bad motives to the Mayor is shabby. The truth is, in spite of your attraction towards victimization, the gun laws in NY aren't for stupid people like this. You persecuted gun owners who "forget" you have a gun on you, are actually not a high priority for the Mayor.

    2. How about eliminating the unjust law that criminalizes a person who is doing no wrong?

    3. No, the law is not unjust. New York does not want you and your guns, nothing unjust about it, they have their reasons.

Unjust would be if they kept it a secret and then trapped visitors with it.

Isn't part of responsible gun ownership knowing what the laws are, especially when travelling. I thought you were an individual responsibility guy, Greg. Be consistent.

    4. I'm well aware of New York's stupid laws, state and city. If they passed a law against Muslims entering or against carrying "Huckleberry Finn" into their jurisdiction, you'd be up in arms about it. Rights are rights, whether you like them or not.

    They broke the fucking law.

Really? Show up with something more than the regurgitated horseshit that you pick up at your gunzloonz palz' websites.

  5. Mike’s point was that Bloomberg is a reasonable guy and that his oppressive laws are only aimed at bad guys, and good guys don’t have to worry about getting caught up in it. I’m with you, Democommie, that is a lame excuse. Bad laws have to go.

You're wrong on at least three points.

Bloomberg didn't make ANY laws, he didn't even get involved in the process. The laws of the state of NY, pertaining to firearms, are made--like every other law in the state--by the state legislature.

The laws are only oppressive to gunzloonz, normal people don't even give them a second thought. Why is that? you may ask. Well, it's because we're not so fucking frightened of the rest of humanity that we need to be able to kill them when they do something that makes us uncomfortable; so we don't need to walk around armed to the teeth.

I do not, in any way, agree with you or any other braindead clown who thinks that gunz solve problemz that they imagine might exist.

    1. So Bloomberg is innocent of all efforts to restrict guns? Try again, Democommie.

  7. "So Bloomberg is innocent of all efforts to restrict guns? Try again, Democommie.'

Sure thing, son; just as soon as you show me the legislation that he proposed and got passed up in Albany, mmmmkay?

    This:

"No. A pistol permit issued by an upstate county is valid in any other county in New York State except New York City.

In order for an upstate licensee to lawfully carry a handgun in New York City, he/she must first make application with the New York City Police Department to have their permit "validated." An investigation will be conducted to determine the authenticity of the license, after which a "needs assessment" will be conducted to determine whether the applicant has sufficiently demonstrated a "need" to possess a handgun under the circumstances provided.

The simple desire to possess a handgun while in New York City, without some other extenuating circumstances, will not serve to present a "need" suitable to receive authorization. In cases where "need" is sufficiently demonstrated, permission will be given, usually for a specific period of time, after which the process would start over again."

    is from here (http://www.troopers.ny.gov/FAQs/Firearms/Permits.cfm)

This information is neither hard to understand nor difficult to access. Of course, as you gunzloonz are so fond of saying, "laws don't matter to criminals.". Hoist on your own fucking petard.

    1. You've heard of BloomingIdiot's organization, perhaps? Mayors Against Guns, or some such? Besides, I haven't heard of him trying to overturn the ridiculous law that you quoted.

  8. Oh, I forgot to add, NYS's legal folks are not shy about telling people from other states to leave their fucking gunz at home, if they're coming to NYC with certain, narrow, exemptions.
