Washington D.C. Tow Truck Driver Charged with Murder after Running Down Man who Robbed Him with a Plastic Pellet Gun

Corey D. Stoddard
Kevin Lewis Crouch walked into a tow lot in Northeast Washington on Tuesday afternoon and asked about a green car. But D.C. police said the 22-year-old man quickly pulled a gun on the tow truck driver who was trying to help him and demanded money.
The driver began to run but tripped and fell, police said, and Crouch struck him twice in the head with the butt of his gun. The driver then heaved his wallet against a fence in the lot on Kenilworth Avenue.
As Crouch went to grab the wallet, police said, the driver climbed into his white Isuzu tow truck and then fatally struck his assailant. On Wednesday, the victim of the armed robbery became a criminal suspect, as police charged Corey D. Stoddard, 35, of Northeast Washington, with second-degree murder while armed, his tow truck being the weapon.
Police said that Crouch was dragged along a sidewalk and that authorities found a pellet gun broken into three pieces under his body when they rolled him over to provide first aid. The death was ruled a homicide late Tuesday — the 104th and final slaying in the District last year.

  1. He is likely being charged because he was no longer being directly threatened. Robber ran for the money and victim ran in the opposite direction. Not sure what the laws are in DC, but you can shoot a fleeing person if you can prove to a jury that you reasonably believed that his escape would cause the death or great bodily harm to another. This is a tough sell. There were also independent witnesses to verify the story.
It will be interesting to the final outcome of this process.

  2. Let's hope the jury doesn't feel the same sympathy for the robber thug that law enforcement has.

    1. Are you saying the killer was justified because he'd been victimized first?

    2. Of course the criminal lying coward thinks it's just fine to (kill) run people down in a vehicle.

    3. I'm saying that I sympathize with the good guy more than with the thief. Don't steal, and this isn't likely to happen to you.

    4. You are saying you approve of the guy chasing him down, even though there was no longer any threat to him since the crook was running away. You are a cowardly lying criminal.

    5. Um, Mike, isn't it your usual position to be very skeptical about claims that a vehicle was used as a weapon? It kinda seems as if your sympathies would lie with the vehicle driver, rather than the gun owner.

    6. "I'm saying that I sympathize with the good guy"

You mean the good guy who purposely murdered someone with his vehicle because he was angry?

    7. "Um, Mike, isn't it your usual position to be very skeptical about claims that a vehicle was used as a weapon? "

Nice attempt at a gotcha, but here's how it works. When a cop shoots someone behind the wheel and afterwards claimed that he feared for his life, I suspect that it was an unnecessary killing. In this post, the tow truck driver purposely killed the thief with his truck because he was so angry at him. It was an unnecessary killing.

Does that help you understand my position? Maybe you're too focused in the tool used and not the improper behavior,

    8. Just another example of the site criminal lying coward supporting murder.

    9. I mean the good citizen who was the victim of a robbery.

But Mikeb, if you acknowledge that a vehicle can be used to kill, why do you call shooting a charging driver an unnessary act?

    10. Typical for the site lying criminal coward to be proven wrong, then like a coward he changes the subject.

    11. It's simple, Greg, so simple that I think you're just breaking balls again by asking. A car can definitely be a deadly weapon, but the chances that the intended victim of that vehicle-weapon can shoot and kill the driver in order to stop the attack is ridiculous. If the gun owner is in the trajectory of the oncoming vehicle, shooting the driver won't change that. The shooter would still have to jump to the side to avoid being run over, and that's whether or not he shoots the driver first.

Come to think of it, today's story might be an example of just that. An unarmed guy behind the wheel ran down and killed an armed man.

    12. Armed with a pellet gun, Mikeb.

    13. Nice way to dodge the point of my fairly lengthy comment which was in answer to your previous ball-breaking one.

    14. "Ball-breaking" isn't a phrase I use, so I ignored that. But someone does need to keep you honest.

    15. It won't be the proven criminal site liar, like the coward you are.

    16. Nice dodge, Greg. When you're backed into a corner you do that personal attacking thing. You have to keep me honest. Ha.

    17. "Armed with a pellet gun, Mikeb."

Mike just posted a story about a person killed with a pellet gun.
You don't believe a pellet gun can kill?

  3. This is criminals like Greg who refuse to call the police, but take the law into their own hands. Greg said he would go hunt down a drug dealer with his gun, even though the drug dealer did nothing to him. Anarchy.

    1. Speaking about refusing to call the police, why are you doing nothing to save this poor man from Greg?

    2. As soon as I find out where and who this drug dealer is, that the site liar is targeting with his violence, I will.

      Delete
    3. Don't you think the police would be able to find the guy better than you?

      Delete
    4. So you agree that it's not necessary to call the police, but just fine for Greg to hunt down a guy, with his gun, who did nothing to him.
Proving again, you are a lying criminal coward.

    5. Again, Anonymous lies. I never said that I would hunt down a drug dealer. I said that I understood what a retired soldier did when he attacked a drug dealer--not with a gun!--who was poisoning his friend.

    6. How did you get that? I just said you should call the police because you believe Greg is hunting someone down. Your complains of Greg are exactly what you are doing. You even said you would find out where and who the drug dealer in danger is. Isn't that "taking the law into your own hands"?

    7. You liars are fucked in the head.
I said I would call the police as soon as I found out.
The site liar lies again, he did say that, and it is in print by his own words.
      Next lie.
Lies are all your criminals have, and thanks for proving it again.

    8. Anonymous, as always, you're free to prove your assertion, but since you can't, you just lie about me.

    9. You proved it yourself with your own words, which everyone already read.
      Next lie.

  4. Listen, Corey is a very good friend of mine...he is a very lovable, kind hearted, goofy person. He will give you the shirt off of his back. How can u people say mean things and u dont know him..no one knows the true story of what happened, so stop speculating what u think to be the truth..the facts are just that, he got robbed and a young man was killed. no one can justify the killing, but on the other hand, how do u know if Corey wasnt fleeing for his life? Please stop bashing my friend, he is a good, hard working guy..Corey would have even given the thief a job with him if he needed one, thats what type of person he is.
