A man in a Mendon restaurant accidentally shot himself and the person he was eating with on Saturday.
The Monroe County Sheriff's department said a man was eating at the Cottage Hotel of Mendon at the corner of Routes 64 and 251 when his gun went off accidentally.
He ended up shooting himself in the hand and ankle and also striking one of the people he was eating with in the ankle as well. So far, no charges are being filed.
eyewitness account:
Rebecca Bauman
yep I was there. There was a family with a toddler and a newborn sitting closest to him. Another family had just sat down. My friend and I had just placed our orders. Really? Do you need a gun to eat at the Cottage in Mendon. This isn't the wild wild west. I do want to say that the staff were very quick to respond to the incident. Our waiter acted fast and provided first aid assistance quickly. The bullet actually went through the hand...his leg...and then hit the foot of the man next to him. Please leave your guns home when eating in a restaurant...or at least have the safety on and don't have a bullet in the chamber. Oh, and using common sense helps.
Another example where someone's right is dangerous to the public at large.
ReplyDeleteIf one can do what one wants as long as it hurts no one else, when can we take away a right that is killing and hurting 10's of thousands?
"According to the gun nuts, concealed carry permits are so rare in New York that they better hope this incident continues to be overlooked with a wink and a nudge."
ReplyDeleteIf this more recent comment is correct, then it would explain why there is no mention of either a permit, or charges. When people with carry permits protested the lack of charges in a similar incident, you commented that they were being petty.
"Jeb Dainard · Niagara University
It was a brighton off duty or retired Cop at that!!! Do I hear "Cover -Up"!!"
I don't think that was my petty comment.
Delete"I don't think that was my petty comment."
Delete"Nevertheless, despite the petty motivations of the demonstrators, they are exactly right."
" I find the resentment of civilian gun owners towards the police petty."

Maybe I wasn't clear. My opinion is not that it's petty to demand that a negligent gun owner be held accountable, regardless of whether or not he's a civilian or a cop, it's that civilian gun owners who continually lament that cops get special treatment is petty.
DeleteDoes that help?
Here is some more information in regards to this event.
ReplyDelete"According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, John Cassata, 70, took out the handgun to show his friends when he fired it by accident.
"He kept saying 'I have a permit, I have a permit,'" said Smith. "Well, if you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, you need to do so responsibly."

All of the quotes seem to be from one person interviewed who was there when it happened. Likely not an off duty cop, but possibly a retired one. Either way, he was hit with an idiot stick.
First we have pocket carry, which might be quite safe if the piece is carried in what is called a pocket holster, my guess is this isn't the case. Then we have someone supposedly with a carry permit pulling out a gun to "show" it to a friend in a public place, effectively violating the concealed part of the permit.
No sympathy for the guy. He screwed the pooch, and the witness is correct in that his actions endangered many others. Even more so if its a retired officer.
Ten, we're in agreement.
DeleteMikeb, if you reject facts, what can we do to help you? Carry licenses are rare in most of the state and just about impossible to get in the big city.
ReplyDeleteBauman's advice on carrying and how to carry is silly.
If I was the other guy who got shot, I would sue him until he was bankrupt, since the law will let him walk. .
DeleteExactly what facts am I rejecting, Greg?
DeleteThe facts about carry licenses in New York, state and city.
DeleteThe site liar won't even mention the post.
DeleteWho cares if the idiot had a carry license, or not?
You lying criminal cowards apparently think this guy did nothing wrong and are OK with his idiotic behavior. True lying gun loons always change the subject.
Anon, where exactly in any of my comments led you to believe that that I thought he didn't do anything wrong?
DeleteIn fact, I said this,
"No sympathy for the guy. He screwed the pooch, and the witness is correct in that his actions endangered many others. Even more so if its a retired officer."
And let me add this as an update to the article,
"A 70-year-old Fairport man is facing charges after sheriff’s deputies say his gun accidentally discharged inside a restaurant.
John Cassata is charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony."
http://www.whec.com/news/stories/s3273634.shtml?cat=565
A couple of other articles I read mentioned him also being charged with assault. Not sure why this one didn't.
You are a liar, that's easy, you have lied to me one to many times. Nothing you say can be trusted. You twist words and outright lie.
DeleteNow go cry to mommy that your lies earned you a horseshit reputation as a congenital liar.
Greg, when you said I was rejecting facts you were wrong. When I questioned you, you evaded with some general bullshit about NY carry license laws. I ask again, exactly what facts did I reject?
DeleteMikeb, you rejected the fact that carry permits in New York are rare. Why can't you follow a simple discussion?
DeleteGreg, I DID NOT reject the fact that carry permits in NY are rare. I said they're "so rare that ..."
DeleteIs that English too sophisticated for you, Greg.
Yet another lie from the criminal lying coward.
DeleteMikeb, you have argued with me and others many times over the ease of getting a carry license in New York. You have denied that licenses go to politically connected people, while ordinary citizens get rejected.
DeleteYes, I have argued those things but that's not the same as denying that carry permits are rare in those states. When "may issue" is in place, carry permits would and should be rare, at least compared to your cowboy and hillbilly states.
DeleteMikeb, that is why your proposals must never pass.
