Accidental Shooting of NC Man While Hunting Turkeys - No Charges

Deputies say a Kernersville man who was accidentally shot while hunting Monday has died.

Tommy Lee Clinard, 63, was found shot in a field near the 2300 block of Pisgah Church Road around 7 a.m. Monday, according to Chief Deputy Brad Stanley with the Sheriff’s Office. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stanley said Clinard, who was hunting turkeys, was shot once by another hunter in the area.
What's your opinion? Is hunting a sick activity, or what. Not only is it about killing animals, which is sick, but every once in a while the hunters kill each other.

What do you think about that? Let us know.

You know that I disagree with you about hunting. I don't see legitimate hunters as being sick or perverted. Having said that I've met plenty of people who think that the "kill" is the ONLY reason to hunt. Then of course there are the guys who cart shitloads of alcohol to their hunting camps but NEVER, EVER drink when they're sitting in a blind or still have loaded guns at hand--sure they don't.

The idea that someone could shoot another human with a shotgun (I gotta guess that's the required weapon for turkey) loaded with birdshot and kill them--without being aware of their presence--is a bit of a stretch, I think.

There are a number of instances up in my neck of the woods, every year, when some hunter whacks another hunter because he takes a "sound shot" or mistakes a human for a deer.

But, hey, I don't have all the facts. Maybe the hunter in question was using his AR-15 with the 30 round box magazine, 'cuz the turkeys are all wearin' teh kevlar.

    1. For some generations hunting has been a way of life handed done to the younger. It is a survival art if you would say .And most Hunters would probably want one as a pet if they could you don't mutilate them it is a gracious spot that you try to hit. It is not barberik at all. What is however are the fools who don't have license and shoot hog wild and don't care about mother nature and leave the animal in the woods to suffer and die

  2. Hunting is not a "sick activity" at all. It is necessary for wildlife managment. That being said, Mr. Clinard was shot with a .22 (which is illegal to use for hunting turkeys in NC), by an unlicensed "hunter" who didn't know his target, and may not have had permission to be there at all. Most hunters are responsible citizens who care as much or more about animals and the environment than a lot of people. This accident was criminal and was caused by one irresponsible person and should not be held against all hunters!

  3. If only all hunters concentrated on shooting each others till they are all exterminated, this planet would be heaven on earth.

    1. WOW! Most hunters are nice and considerate people who would never be mean enough to even think that about a group of people. This Country was founded on certain freedoms and I guess one of those is freedom of speech - unfortunately some people are so cruel they let that freedom override a sense of decency.

    2. Why is it that gun control advocates express their desires to see gun owners get killed? On this site, Laci has stated his desire to beat me and his hope that I'll shoot myself. WhyNot wants to see hunters kill each other so they'll stop polluting his precious bodily fluids. I'm beginning to think that gun control advocates should be banned from having guns.

    4. Why Not, I think hunting is sick, but I wouldn't go that far.

    5. guns are to be respected same as laws that protect innocent hunters in the woods you must have a hunters license to hunt and they teach you the rules and you should always have someone with you a Buddy ,you always make sure what you are shoting at real hunters know that , and always take a Buddy with you just in case theres an unknown person carry around a gun in the morning. Always. Real hunters always know where their Buddy is at.

    1. My guess is there are shitheads who are too stupid to follow the rules in all groups, this one just happened to be hunting at the time. It is very sad that one moron takes a loving husband, father and grandfather away from his family, while making the whole group defend their actions and practices on websites like this one. I see absolutely nothing wrong with hunting, I do see something wrong with this one man and his inability to obey the law.

    4. I'm so sorry for your loss. What do you feel about my idea that the shooter should never own guns again.

  5. Mikeb, you keep telling us that hunting is sick, but why do you say that? Since you're asserting a position that's outside the norm, both in human history and in many contemporary societies, please explain on what you base this.

    1. Greg, shooting live things with bullets is not my idea of a normal activity. I'm talking only for myself, naturally. It's an opinion. It's not very different from the way I feel about gun ownership. Both hunters and gun owners who do it right, I have no problem with.

A.) It's a LOT more than ONE moron.

7.) They don't actually have to defend safe and sane attitudes about firearms ownership.

e.II/z602) The actions of the "one moron" in the instant case? They are not defensible.

  9. Some hunters never shot the deer they love to watch them also .Go to the slaughters houses and see how those animals are mass produced and pushed into grind machines alive and it goes into our grocery stores they are pumped with hormone so the will grow faster feed whatever slop they have and ARSENIC.And somehow we think thats ok. The deer roam wild and free and get to live and love and mate. Turkeys are protected too only so many can be shot and only certain times they are given a chance to get away and most do. Chickens however in barns can never get away from their death .

  10. Do you know how many deer are ran over and killed in the united states thats a painful death .Their is no where for them to roam with hunting and if they were no hunters there would be so many traggic accidents. for the deer that roam free.

    1. I know animal conservation is a complex business. But I can't believe there aren't better ways of doing it than letting people to go into the woods with guns.
