Accidental Shooting of Kentucky Man by Self - He's Dead, His Friend is Seriously Wounded

Kevin McElrath, 25, was found dead of gunshot wound to the head in the kitchen of his home. He was pronounced dead by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.

Eric Partain, 22, of Williamsburg was critically injured from a head wound. He was taken by ambulance to the London airport and then airlifted to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

According to witness statements, the shooting happened after McElrath removed the clip from a .45-caliber pistol and it accidentally discharged, hitting him in the head, the release said.

Partain was struck in the head with the same bullet.
Sounds like he forgot there was one in the chamber. How can this happen so often? Please don't tell me to divide the number of these incidents by the 80 million gun owners in the country. The fact that it EVER happens is unbelievable, as is the fact that people would ever point the gun at themselves. Who are these people?

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

  1. My opinion? Life is fragile and there are a lot of ways to die. Guns are only one way and don't even make the top 10. I get your point Mike but I don't agree with you. The 4 rules of safe gun handling exist for a reason. Break one of them and someone dies. Kind of like driving, screw up even for a second and you or someone else could end up dead.

  2. The weapon didn't accidentally discharge. Someone pulled the trigger. Someone had the pistol pointed in the wrong direction. People make bad choices, and as was told you, gun accidents happen with less frequency than other types of screwups, but when you have a law that will stop people from doing stupid things without preventing free citizens from making choices, I'll listen.

  4. The reconstruction of this "stupident" will be interesting. How do two guys get shot in the head by the same bullet? Were they standing next to each other? It sounds more than a bit, "odd".

Sounded odd in the Warren Commission too.

  5. Actually this person broke several safety rules. First, he pointed the barrel in an unsafe direction. Second, he failed to inspect the chamber and action (and cycle the action multiple times) to verify that the gun was empty. Third, he put his finger on the trigger and squeezed it. So he actually violated three safety rules and that's when bad things happen. As it turns out, you can violate any two of the safety rules that you want and nothing bad will happen. You have to violate all three.

  6. The 4 Rules of Gun Safety are great. The problem is way too many of you gun owners don't obey them. You should own that and stop trying to say how responsible and safe you are.

    1. And some people don't wear seat belts or helmets. Some people don't use sun screen or eat enough broccoli. How much control are you going to insist on? No matter where your control measures end, people will find ways to screw up.

Two of those four actions will not lead to instant death, the other two might, but usually none of those four actions are going to kill someone else on the next block. Your clumsy false equivalencies are evidence that you have a hard time with that thinking shit.
