"In God We Trust" or "E Pluribus Unum"

Time to get back to our roots and to me that starts with dropping “In God We Trust“ and returning to  “e pluribus unum” (Out of Many, One) as our official motto.

It was adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782, although not as an official motto but what came to be considered, de facto, the basic statement of the USA. It is on the official Seal of the United States.

“In God We Trust,” in this era of the Religious Right separating itself from any compromise position with the center or the left, is meaningless.  What do we trust in God for? That He would allow one side to corrupt the country in His name? If we don’t get back to unifying the many, we will no longer have control of the basics of daily life.

  1. On this point, I agree. The Supreme Court has said words to the effect that as long as the "God" in question has no meaning--ceremonial deism, in other words--it doesn't violate the First Amendment. I can't see how that comforts anyone. Many European nations have official religions, and a large portion of the population is atheist. Iran and Saudi Arabia have official religions, and their approach is intolerable. America is officially secular, and we have more believers here than just about anywhere else. Freedom works.

You have more people that SAY they're believers but don't bother with going to church or behaving as christians. Yeah, we got that.

No prayers, or other christian woo, ever, at any governmental gathering is about right.

  3. I liked Ben Franklin's suggestion for our motto: "Mind your (own) business."

  4. Democommie, why are you such an angry old cuss? Even on points where we agree, you can't avoid disagreeing with me. You can't show anything that meets your approval. Is there anything in this world that you like?

    1. Greg, That didn't sound angry to me. Somewhat cynical perhaps, but an observation that I agree with. Certainly not an "angry old cuss" kinda remark.

Are trying to draw democommie out? I've asked everybody to keep the name calling and personal attacking down, but in this comment you seem to be doing a bit of that with the intention of arousing anger in him.

    2. 1. I'm not trying to draw him out. I'm observing that he never has anything good to say about anyone.

      2. Out of fairness, though, I deserve a lot of leeway on comments. It would take me a long time to match the tone and quantity of several of your cobloggers.

Awwww, poor Greg, he's been so abused! Man up, you crybaby.

Well, that would be news to me, agreeing with you on any point. mikeb302000 has asked me to refrain from treating you with the disdain that you so richly deserve. I guess I'll have to treat you like I treat my little roommate, Buddy the Wonder Dog. He occassionally shits where he's not supposed to. I know, you'd train him out of that but hey, that's just one of your many talents. What I do is, let him know it is a bad idea to engage in that behavior. He's not too bright, but with his little doggie brain, he's figured out that it's not a good idea to crap in the house. You with that big squash of yours and what is prolly about, what, 1400 cc or so of gray matter?--have not. Oh, I might add that he only whines when I test the smoke/CO detector.
