Poll: Georgia Voters Disapprove of New Gun Law

PBS reports

A new poll shows Georgia voters disapprove of the state’s new gun law, despite being more likely to own guns or believing gun ownership helps protect people.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents gave HB 60, or the Safe Carry Protection Act, a thumbs down, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll conducted by SRBI of New York. The bill will allow licensed gun owners to carry firearms in many churches, bars, and government buildings. It will also allow military men and women age 18 and older permission to obtain a license to carry a firearm. Under current law, applicants must be at least 21 years old to be granted a gun permit.

Fifty-seven percent of Georgia voters said they believe owning a gun helps protect people from crime. A majority of the people polled — 55 percent — say they or someone they live with owns a gun. Only 35 percent said gun ownership puts people’s safety at risk.

The poll surveyed 1,012 adults statewide between May 5 and May 8.

  1. If the voters don't like the legislation being passed by their elected representitives, then they have but to participate in the most effective poll of all, that being the upcoming midterm elections
Its a much more reliable indicator than a telephone survey.

  2. Why aren't these legislators voting the wishes of their constituents? Maybe because the NRA gives them thousands of dollars and most voters don't give money to politicians at all.

But voters have something that lobbyists don't. Their vote either for them or against their opponent. And if the politician pisses off enough voters by not representing their views, it wont matter how much money the lobbyists give them, they'll be out of a job.

  4. It works just fine for each state. One has but to look at states like New Jersey and California to see that the voters get what they want. And if what you say is true, now that former Mayor Bloomberg has promised to outspend the NRA, so we should be seeing may issue carry permits in Arizona.
