Charlton Heston Addressing the NRA

No wonder the pro-gun guys are so full of it.  Did you ever hear such nonsense?  This was the NRA Convention in Charlotte NC on May 20, 2000.

When freedom shivers in the cold shadow of true peril, it's always the patriots who first hear the call. When loss of liberty is looming as it is now...

sacred stuff resides in that wooden stock and blued steel

when ordinary hands can possess such an extraordinary instrument, that symbolizes the full measure of human dignity and liberty
I could go on, but you get the idea. Such overblown rhetoric should be laughed at, not taken seriously. Heston and his speechwriters are conmen preying on the masses of gun owners who, less discerning and more easily manipulated, actually take this stuff to heart. It's sad.

What's your opinion?  Please leave a comment.

  1. Well, Chuck's cold dead fingers are a matter of record at this point.

A lot of people (gunzfolkz, mostly) were upset when Michael Moore's "Gotcha Interview" wound up in "Bowling for Columbine". I can certainly understand their being irate. If my favorite organization's spokesmook turned out to be a somewhat goofy oldster it would say much more about the cyncical bastards (I'm lookin' at you, Wayne) who were using him as a public face.

Heston joins that long line of DOFOC's* somewhere between Mel Thomson and St. Ronnie the Miscommunicator.

  2. Just an aside.

I notice, for the umpteenth time, that the gunzloonz flock to a post like this one but, curiously, stay away from lots of other posts about idiots and cowards and their gunzlust.

"It's sad that you're that cynical.

Not even a whisker to the beard of assholes like Wayne LaPierre.

  4. What a crock of over-blown prose.

Sheeesh, you'd think an actor like Heston would know the difference between good clean use of language, versus this crap.

It is not good writing; it is not a good speech. That is not cynicism.

  5. I think Farago must be ribbing me with that cynicism remark.

I don't think even he believes in the tyrannical government nonsense, not in his heart of hearts.

I noticed that 5 out of 7 comments on this post were from anti gun loons. Who's flocking?

  7. First two comments by you and Mr. Farago.

Please show me where either of you make the first (or any) comments on a post that has to do with murder/suicide, mass shootings with NOT FULLY AUTOMATICE, JUST DAMNED EASY TO SHOOT THIRTY ROUNDS OUTTA, LIKE, DOUBLE QUICK WEPPINS or any of the other posts that don't set off the gunzdar.

  9. Oh, okay, I see. Yes, you certainly did come on that post to discuss the tragedy that ensues when shitheads or crazy people get their hands on guns and exterminate those with whom they disagree. Oh, wait, no, that's not quite right. You used most if not all of your comments to complain about the MSM's mischaracterization of the weapons used (including that wonderful swipe at journalists with the "gun guide".).

  10. Charlton Heston wasn't even a great actor. He played himself like Jack Nicholson does.
